Which is harder to get into? Also, does one’s geographic residence play a large part in the admissions process? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Dunno

None

Go to Irvine. Irvine roolz, Davis droolz.

(UC Irvine, class of '81, why do you ask?)

Because I want to apply to 2 UCs (and 8 cal states), and I want to pick UCs that I have a decent shot at. My UC gpa isnt so hot (3.1), but I can probably get over 1800 on the SAT reasoning test, plus I attend a prestigious magnet school. My choices are: (UC Santa Cruz, UC Irvine, and UC Davis).

if you have 3 uc's in mind, why not apply to all 3? sure its $60 more, but why regret not applying to just 1 more.

what major will you declare?

I want to major in computer science.

UCI and UCD are about equal difficulty for admission, and, with a 3.1, they would be a reach, unless you have extenuating circumstances.

They vary, but as bluebayou said, they're similar in difficulty. I think UCI is getting tougher and UCD is getting worse, so I'm predicting that UCI is going to be harder to get into, but a 3.1 isn't going to bode well for admissions at either university. And the 1800 won't do much to help it, I'm afraid. I have a friend who had really mediocre grades but a stellar SAT score of 2280, and the best UC he got into was UCSB.

the plus factor for UCI is that it is a growing campus, so they take more students each year.

Maybe so, but I know that UCI only accepts 12% of applicants who have a 3.0-3.25 GPA, while UCD accepts 30%.

point well taken.

For the matriculating class of 2008, Davis accepted 17% of gpa's from 3.0-3.29. Irvine accepted 11% of gpa's from 3.0-3.29. Both schools had mean gpa of 3.91, and similar mean SAT scores: Davis - 1247, and Irvine = 1251, identical Math scores (639) and Writing scores (old test) with a one point differential; D=617, I=618.

btw: UCSC mean gpa = 3.71; they accpeted 37% of gpa's between a 3.0-3.29. SAT score = 1199, Math 599, W=597. UCR had a mean of 3.60, and accepted 65% of students with a gpa between 3.0-3.29. Mean SAT = 1137, M=579, and W=550.

Write an awesome essay, so they just have to have you on their campus. Good luck.

Actually, based on last year's admissions, UCSC accepted over 65% of applicants who had a 3.0-3.25 GPA. I read this in the most recent UC catalog.

I don't know too many kids at UCD that had that low of a GPA dude. I would suggest you apply to UCI where I know many kids who got in with a lower GPA and SAT scores. UCI seems to be sinking due to a lack of good sports teams and a dull comuter school atmosphere. UCSB is harder to get into than UCD and UCI due to its smaller size and beach location. It would help if you can bring up the SAT scores more. As to campus size Davis is the largest UC.

well, so far, among the UC's, UCSC is my target, and UCI and UCD are my reach.

Consider geography. UCI is definitely in the OC and all that implies. Southern California is (for the most part, quietly) looked down on by Northern California.
The reverse generally does not hold true.
If the landscape, etc. is important, UCI features access to beaches, thick traffic, smog. Davis is closer to San Francisco (well, closer than Irvine!) and it's easy to go skiing and get to some of the gorgeous places in North of the City.

That may be, but so far, my primary concern is getting accepted into UCSC, let alone UCD and UCI. ;)

hye345, It doesn't matter which one is easier to get into if you apply to both. And you should apply to both. I'd suggest you decide which one you want to go to after you get in. Meanwhile spend your time working on your essays.

I have already finished my essays, and I have applied to UCI, UCD, and UCSC. I would be pleasantly surprised If I get accepted into UCSC, let alone the other two.

Davis is hella easy to get into, you should be ok. Don't bs the essays.

I actually got into Davis, I got rejected from Irvine. Now that I go to Davis, I'm sure it's not that great. I'd go to Irvine if I was gonna major in Comp. Science.

Are you serious? Even with a 3.1 GPA?
