I've written several essays for the Common App. However, I keep coming back to an essay I wrote about Harry Potter. Although I'm involved with many different clubs, Harry Potter is a passion of mine that shows my interests and history well. The essay is well written and shows the connection I've had with the books.

Features:
- Meeting J.K. Rowling
- Taking guitar lessons to form a "wizard rock" band with my friend
- How the books influenced me to start making videos and documentary films

Although I hope I've shown a new approach to this cliche topic, I'm curious if an admissions officer will not bother because it's such an overdone topic. Any thoughts?

Personally, as long as your passion lies in it, I see no problem with writing about something that might be considered overdone. After all, what’s the use of pursuing something original if you can’t be passionate and enthusiastic about it? Being original is useless if you come across as a robot.

Harry Potter is an overdone topic?? I was not aware, haha. Personally, I think people put too much emphasis on choosing a unique topic; if you can write a good essay around Harry Potter, go for it!
I think your primary concern is going to be making sure you don’t sound immature, not putting an original twist on the Harry Potter essay.
