I wanted to do some /not necessarily/ corny joke/metaphor in my essay near the end involving Harry Potter and Dumbledore. I was wondering.. if I should take it out because they may not understand and find me strange?

On the other hand, I think my metaphor ties in with my purpose and UChicago very well.

What? Harry Potter? You read that kooky wizard book? What a weirdo.

Seriously, though, you’ll be fine. Or maybe you won’t be fine, but that has nothing to do with the fact that you referenced Harry Potter in your essay.

I actually feel like I lot of people do the Harry Potter/UChicago connection and it was pretty heavily emphasized on the campus tour I went on… take that how you will?

Don’t rely on Harry Potter to make your essays unique. A lot of people add it to their essays just because they think that’s what the admissions counselors want to hear.

happilyhelen: I’m not sure how other people connected Harry Potter/UChicago, but I did more than just ‘studying in Hogwarts’ kind of thing.
Btw, I saw your ‘Find x’ one and it was absolutely brilliant!
Would you mind reading my Why UChicago?

OxalisWombo: That’s true. I only added Harry Potter in my Why UChicago one because I wanted them to understand my personality a bit better. Would you mind reading it?

Absolutely! I’m sure it’s okay as long as you’re an actual fan. I read one essay from a fellow CC-er who is probably more guilty of the crime I discussed above than you; she described “catching the golden stitch”.

Sorry, I’d love to read it, but I’m sort of swamped with my own apps at the moment (parents being Asian and making me apply to other places even though I really just want to go to chicago…grrr) Good luck though!
