Any thoughts about these two programs? Thank you.
I am not at all well versed in the OCU VP program since we didn’t look at that school (too far from home) and D is accepted to Hartt for MT, not AT, but the AT program is solid. The downside is that AT majors can’t audition for mainstage musicals (but have other opportunities from what I understand), the pro side is the relationship with Hartford Stage and the Shakespeare semester in London. That opportunity is only for AT students, not MT (which is disappointing to D who loves her some Bard - but MTs get a semester course of Shakespeare at Hartt, just not in London). We have been very impressed by all of our interaction with Hartt faculty and students so far. It seems to be a very collaborative and supportive environment.
I can tell you a little about OCU. VPs at OCU can audition for all musicals, operas and straight shows. Each voice studio at OCU has some VPs and some MTs. You would also take things like music theory, aural skills and piano with MTs as well as other music majors. I would think in comparing the 2 programs you should look at the curriculum for each. I’m guessing you will get much less acting training as a VP major. And less voice/music training in the acting program. They both sound like interesting optIons. But the focus of training would be very different in each. We did not look at Hartt so I can’t comment on it, but I’m guessing the 2 schools also differ somewhat in location and campus environment. You may want to list pros and cons for each program on a sheet of paper to see which best meets your what you are looking for. Good luck!
The Hartt program seems to have a lot of connections with surrounding professional theatres.
Just so you can compare the schools, I will mention that OCU also has relationships with professional theaters in their area including City Rep and Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma.
Thanks for all the responses. Two different programs for sure, but it seems like this is a very difficult decision.
@mom4kids - if you have other questions about OCU, feel free to PM me. I’ll be glad to try to answer them. It sounds like you have at least two great programs to decide between
I am an MT major at Hartt and I love it! The MT’s actually have the opportunity to go to England next winter to do Shakespeare masterclasses and work with people on the West End! We are all very excited about it. Im pretty sure they want to do the trip semi annually! I am happy to answer more of your questions!
Thanks, BFAbaby96, for that info. One of the reasons I chose the actor training program was because of the Shakespeare training.
