Thank you all for your replies. Sadiedkh, do the ‘apartments’ on campus function like dorms, or are they more independent, with rent to pay ,etc.?

They’re dorms, newbieat-- chosen through residential life, paid through room and board (and no need to sublet during the summer, phew!)

Oh, good. Gwen, has your D gone through the process for next year’s housing yet? Can they request specific roomates in the apartments on campus?

Yes, newbie, in fact they usually do. (Though there’s a process to help if you go random.) D is hoping for a 3br apt with her friends, and they are requesting a specific one. Whether they’ll get it I’m not sure! They choose in order of who has the most credits and highest gpa (how they work that out with the groups I don’t know.) But Hartt kids take so many credits that they have a little edge.

Thank you Gwen, D really wants to house with just girls, so this may help.

Newbie-- my D felt the same, so she stayed in the complexes this year (each floor is one gender.) She has been very happy on her floor, with about 14-15 girls, 2 baths and a common room. And they’d never put both genders together in an apt except by request.

Gwen, my D will be relieved. The one gendered floors in the complexes sound right for her; she won’t like the 2 shared bathrooms but such is college life. You’d be surprised how many places mix genders first year. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, it’s just not for my (somewhat) shy D! Thanks.

She sounds a lot like my D! She’s going to have a great year, I’m sure.

Gwen, I PM’d you. Let me know if you didn’t get it as it’s my first time!

It worked! I got it and replied!

We officially committed to The Hartt School yesterday for Dance Performance and today we are filling out forms for housing and meal plans. D has joined the the Facebook group so hopefully she will connect with others for potential room-mates. We aren’t clear on the meal plans though and not sure what would be best given that most of their time will be at HPAC and meals will most likely be at the Backstage Cafe. Does the Backstage Cafe take Dining Dollars or the meal plan credits? Is the Freshman Exclusive or flex the way to go…so confusing! Thanks for your help!

Most were happy with the freshman exclusive this year, and it is the least expensive. Backstage does accept meal credits. And most seem to eat dinner on campus-- D usually goes back on the shuttle, changes clothes and eats before going back to HPAC for rehearsal. I’m sure your D will get lots of info on the FB page! It is exciting!!

Freshman exclusive is best bang for buck for sure. Until this year Backstage on did meal plan for lunch, but they now accept it for dinner too which is a big thing for kids who are either teching or performing since they are in rehearsal every night

I’d like to plan a family vacation during winter break. Do the freshman MTs have any mandatory Winterterm commitments? (The VPs are crew for the upperclass opera and return early for rehearsals.)

Hi! I’m a rising Junior MT. Thought I’d help out. Freshman year once you’re done with your finals you have nothing else to do. My freshman year I only had my ear training final and was fortunate enough to take it early on so I went home almost a week before finals ended. There are no MT or AT commitments during break so not to worry! But be careful scheduling plane tickets and such in advance before you know your child’s finals schedule so you don’t end up with angry teachers!

If you have any other questions I’m more than happy to answer!

I’m thinking January, so she’d better be done with finals by then And I’ll make sure I don’t cut our return date too close to the start of the second semester – you never know what a good snowstorm might do to air traffic…

Hi! I’m a senior in high school awaiting a lot of college decisions for musical theatre. I am really big on having a campus feel in college and when I auditioned, I was afraid that since the Hartt School is a couple mins away from the University, that the Hartt kids won’t really be able to interact with the other majors. Is this true? And could you tell me a little bit about how involved you are with the other U of H students?

kirasinger17, it really depends what you make of it. Many of us move off campus after freshman year so I’ve rarely spent time on campus. You definitely have the opportunity to get involved in things on campus (a lot of people in the program have started to join Greek Life) so it’s totally up to you. I think it’s like that at any school. Plus it’s only the classes we take for our major that are at HPAC so if you want to spend time on campus and get to know students at the university you totally can!

Thanks corigayle! How long do you typically spend at that separate building per day?
