Hello! I am a current freshmen Musical Theatre major at the Hartt School at University of Hartford and I just wanted to start a thread so I can answer any questions about the day in the life, auditions, etc etc! :)

Hey real quick question, how big is your class size this year? Because I remember reading a thread a couple weeks ago about it being closer to 40 or some crazy number but I wasn’t sure if it was true.

Hello all! If you have any questions…i’m free to answer any time…well not ANY time…but when i’m free…hahahaha

Well it is actually quite large, about 37 students! But they actually did a very good job in managing us! They hired about 3 new voice teachers as well as added on more classes! My classes aren’t any bigger than 15 people! They really knew how to handle us very well! And also sadly people will drop throughout the years, it is sad, but it happens!

Wait who are you? hahaha I probably know you then This is Katie Luke!

Also, *Freshman, oops!

Hi Katie! It’s Michelle! haha

But I’m here too if anyone needs help with anything :)

YAY! So excited…Hartt is amazing!!!

Since they had such a big class are they going to be doing a cut at the end of your freshman or sophmore year?

Nope! As of now, they are not planning to cut the class and I do not think that is going to change. Sadly, people will drop by choice throughout the years, but they are not cutting the class :).

I’m planning on auditioning on Dec. 10th in Hartford! Any tips or advice you could give?

Hi, I know you are MT students, but I’m hoping you can ask a question about the acting program…is the class size as big as the MT class for acting? And do you know if they’re hoping to have as big a class for next year? or smaller? Thank you!! :)

Hello MarisaRose, I’m a current Hartt AT freshman and I can tell you we have 19 Actor Training majors in the freshman class currently. This makes us currently the biggest AT class but in comparison to other programs we are still quite small. I don’t believe they are planning on having as big of a class. I think they shoot for around 12 ATs and 24 MTs. At least thats what we were told when I looked at the school last year.

Oh wow, that’s such a great size! Even if it is the biggest class yet that’s still very small! Thank you for answering! :)

No problem! I would be happy to answer any more questions you might have about my experience with Hartt or with the audition process.

Hi! My D is auditioning at Hartt on Saturday and I have a question about the dance audition. She has only had training in tap and jazz - except for a ballet class when she was very young - so she has no ballet slippers. The paper that was sent in the mail says to “bring ballet and jazz shoes” but the website says to “bring ballet or jazz shoes.” So my question is should she buy or borrow a pair of ballet slippers before she comes or will her jazz shoes be sufficient? Of course, we want her to have what she needs but we would put off buying ballet slippers right now if we knew several others would only be using jazz shoes also. Any thoughts from those who’ve been there? Thanks so much!!

Also, not to sound stupid, but do the girls all wear tights and leotards or are jazz pants and a tight t-shirt all right? Obviously, dance is the area she has not had as much experience in! Hopefully it’s true that the “lack of dance experience will not prevent acceptance” as our letter states!

I auditioned in December and ballet shoes are not necessary. I wore both but most people simply wore jazz shoes and if she can, a leotard and shorts or jazz pants work best. I wore a leotard and dance shorts!

Thank you so much, samijma! I really appreciate your help! Best wishes for all of your auditions and future decisions!

It would be sooo great if you Hartt freshmen could add to the “Freshman Experience” thread below, or the Actor Training Freshman Experience thread on the theater board. I-- and all here, would love to know more! Thanks!

Hello!

I was wondering if you describe your classes at Hartt? How are they like? Are there a lot of masterclasses going on etc.?

Thank you!
