Hartt School - shuttle bus logistics

My daughter has been offered a spot in the MT program. We just came back from a visit and D was very impressed with the program, especially the voice component. I have a question to anyone who is familiar with logistics of getting back and forth from the campus to the performing arts building, which is about a 5 minute ride from main campus. How much of a hassle is it for you to get back and forth? Does the shuttle bus run frequently? How does it work after a late night practice?

^^^So glad you asked this question, S is in the same boat. He likes everything about Hartt except for this one issue. He too is concerned about the theatre complex being off-campus in a not-so-great neighborhood and the logistics of getting to & from the main campus for gen ed classes, meals and especially late at night. It would be great if someone who is currently in the program or very familiar with the program could provide information.

I’m going to be a freshman at Hartt in the fall but when I visited my mom was just as concerned. They said the shuttle runs pretty regularly (some times it can be a few minutes late in the morning but teachers understand.) As far as late nights go, I’m pretty sure it still runs due to the fact that it services the students there so it would obviously need to. Also keep in mind that lots of students have cars so it’s pretty easy to catch a ride with someone. And since freshmen don’t perform, they don’t have to worry as much about being there super late.

The shuttle system is nothing to fret over! I’m a freshman this year and we haven’t had any problems except for on the weekends. The shuttle does come very regularly and complies with our schedules well. There are period where the shuttle also goes to Clemens Place and the Asylum Avenue grad housing, so it takes 50 minutes to get back to campus, however thats only 4 times a day and I’ve never had to deal with that. The shuttle rides are quick (5-10 minutes depending on the time of day) and if you miss it there are always people who can drive you, or you just wait another 10-20 minutes for it to come back. The area around it does look scary, but its not bad at all. I’ve walked to HPAC from the main campus a few times when I’ve had to be there on Sundays for the occasional rescheduled voice lesson, and have never ever encountered a problem. People often drive down Albany Avenue (coming from the city) and think that the entire area surrounding the school is like that, but it’s not. I hope that helps answer your questions! Best of luck with your decisions everyone! Warm wishes!

This is pretty much what we heard from most of the kids each of the times we have been to the school. It seems like pretty much a non-issue for them.

We were concerned as well coming from the city, and our last trip omg, we took a really scenic route lol. But we also did some roaming around and discovered most of the surrounding areas to be pretty residential.

Net/net, be aware, not afraid.

The shuttle is a godsend for my son who lives off campus at Clemens Place. He is MT junior this year. Often times he catches the shuttle and then just gets rides back with the dozens of students who have cars and also live in that area. The shuttle also runs to the mall area where the kids can do their shopping.
One change from last school year is the folding bike he took to school last year. He loves it and sometimes ride to the Handel center from his apartment just to enjoy the beautiful old houses and gardens on the way there and then takes the shuttle or gets a ride back home . The area where the Handel center is looks intimidating if you are coming from the freeway but the other direction is quite picturesque. After 3 years, there has been no problem with that neighborhood and no problem getting around, even living off campus.

Thank you all for your responses. It helps put the mind of a mom “who has never sent a child away to college” at ease. :)
