Hartt Talent Scholarships

Has anyone ever spoken with them and succeeded in getting more money?

Hartt uses all it’s scholarship money to attract students they think will be offered numerous positions at other schools, in other works, in a ‘pecking order’. This was explained to me by a secretary from within the MT department. We didn’t call, after being given nothing, but friends did, and were told nothing would be changed. I don’t mean to sound bitter, it’s just that I have trouble understanding why kids are not rewarded for scholastic merit at all, and all the money is used as mentioned above. OR that they are not allowed to accept merit awards from the University itself. I think that kids who have worked hard to excel academically indicates that they have staying power and personal drive, and should be awarded accordingly.

Sadiedkh…more money? We were not offered anything outside a federal loan. And believe me I am a lower middle class single mom who can no way afford the tuition at Hartt.
I guess if we received even a small scholarship we would be happy with that.

As to what Christie mentions that the MT secretary stated about using the scholarships as a way to “lock in” the kids that everyone wants. That may be the case but I do not see a lot of the kids accepted at other schools being on the Hartt list. Just a handful, otherwise I see names of some kids that I don’t see listed any where but Hartt (at least on the CC list). My daughter has two additional acceptances and 3 waitlists but that did not help us receive ANY $$.

I agree that the methods used to determine who gets offered what, is not clear and is about as random as the acceptance process. I just hope the MT grads of today who are sucessful remember their alma mater and can help other kids cover their tuition costs.

My D received her MT admittance letter today. There was no mention of any sort of performing arts or talent based scholarship. If a scholarship was going to be offered to her, would it have been mentioned in this letter? Since nothing was mentioned, does that mean notheing will be offered?

My D received her MT admittance letter yesterday and the within the body of the acceptance letter, she was offered a talent based scholarship.

I auditioned for Hartt and haven’t received a letter yet. Is that bad?

Also, I received a phone call from Ashley Malcolm about 3-4 weeks ago asking if I had gotten into other schools and if i was still interested in Hartt. Did the people who were accepted get this call? Do you think she calls everyone or is this a good sign?

P.S. I auditioned for Actor Training not MT.

Hopeful - we didn’t get any sort of call, just the acceptance letter. But again, this was for musical thetre. It also seems that Hartt was very slow in sending out letters.

Thistle33 - Congrats on you D’s acceptance and the scholarship offer! My D’s letter was pretty clear that only FAFSA aid (loans and such) would be offered, which pretty much puts Hartt out of the running for her.

Kaisdad: Thanks! Yes, Hartt is pricey, even with the talent scholarship. From other schools my D has been accepted to, there was always a combination of talent and merit $ making the total scholarship much greater. But we will be visiting Hartt mid-April.

Son auditioned in instrumental performance at Hartt, so there are probably differences in how this all runs, but I thought our recent experiences/interactions with the school might be useful to others.

We have not heard anything official from the school regarding admission yet, but S did receive several e-mails from the instructor in his instrument asking what his interest level in the school was and saying that he (the instructor) would REALLY like my son in his studio. He asked where Hartt is on S’s list of schools if all things ($) were equal.

When we later started receiving e-mails saying that S should apply for housing and join the class of 2016 Facebook page, I called Admissions and asked about the official decision letter (on it’s way? Lost in the mail?). I was told that he was accepted on the 23rd but that his acceptance was printed today (03/30) and should be mailed today. The Hartt School, they said, runs late. They told me that the financial aid package will come separately, but they were able to inform me that S is being offered a VERY GOOD talent scholarship. They told me how much when I told them we need to start making some decisions. I don’t know the whole financial aid package yet, but we now have something to look at as we make further decisions.
