Harvard Accepted Transfer Stats

I also did horrible in my last year of HS. Mostly because I had a 3.8 unweighted GPA and a 30 ACT which are not impressive but would've gotten me into UIUC at least I think. But my dad was laid off from his job twice in less than one year and we weren't able to borrow money for college from the bank. I was pretty depressed and didn't have the discipline or motivation to do anything else after that and as a result I got horrible grades and slept all day.

I'm entering a community college in the fall and it's kind of funny because they'll run out of math and physics classes to give me after 3 semesters but I think that I'll take the rest of their science classes so I can build a great application in 5 semesters of community college.

It's good to hear your story because it gives me some hope that I may reach a big engineering school in two years or so.

Calipharius: your response is very insightful and seems to be dead on. I'd like to ask you a few question about my own transfer case but I can't PM you; is there a better way to get a hold of you, if you have the time?

Hey Cali, I tried to pm you and it said that your inbox is full. Would you mind sending the apps to my email (EPorrell@gmail.com)? I'm not skeptical, just interested in gathering as much useful information as possible to help others down the road.

Thank you for your help, and good luck in the future.

I'd go to Harvard. I wouldn't care that I had to waste a year.

I'm going to be applying for transfer from Duke in December 2005, for entrance in fall 2006.

this would make me feel so much better if you weren't a URM (no offense =)

So the consensus here is that SATI scores are very important for transfers. But what about an applicant with strong SAT I scores (old version ) and weak SAT subject tests? What level of importance do they have?

woah, weight hepcat... i was just about to post a question about SAT IIs. Brown is the only school that I know of that actually REQUIRES SAT IIs. Other schools say, if you havn't taken them, don't worry about it. SAT IIs are probably are taken more heavily into consideration at some places than others however it's hard to imagine a school that says they are optional gives them much weight at all.

In a similar vein to what has already been discussed:
Would I have to take the SATs again (or, at least, should I)? I got a 1350 and am looking to transfer to Columbia, Brown, and...Yale/Harvard to name a few. I would be a junior status applicant.

calipharius, my former BU classmate

I have a couple of comments for you. Your GPA at BU was excellent, similar to mine at BU. We were both in the 3.8+ range. However, I don't think you can attribute your tranfer school results based on the SAT. I had a 1400, which people consider the "norm", But nontheless, take a look at the schools you applied to.

Harvard-Seriously, you think you had a shot?
Brown-Weird School...only IVY I was rejected to as a transfer
Trinity-Hmmm, you should of been in
Dartmouth-they take 25 transfers out of 300+ apps...very tough to get in
Williams-#1 LAC....also very tough

The reason I say this is b/c I also went to BU last year. This fall, however, I will be attending UPenn. I applied to Cornell, Penn, and Brown, and was only denied to Brown. I think that if you had applied to Northwestern, Penn, Cornell, Emory, Gtown, Wash U, JHU, you would def. had several transfer options. Sorry to hear about your story.

if you can - take it. not for cornell for example but take stanford for example - they say that they dont even look at you if you have less than 650 in any section. let alone better schools.
people all over boards have tried to persuade me not to take the sat again.
thought about it for a day and then started studying that wordlist diligently.

if you want something bad enough fight with all your resources until you drop. i will take it three times if i have to until january.

also to the guy that is asking about the SAT IIs.
i havent looked at dartmouth and duke but for the rest of top 14 SAT II's are required for 1. Standford 2. MIT only. hope this helps.

to newyorkcity2012: can you specify how is your sat distributed between math and verbal. i have 1410 but it is 630+780 which i think looks awful...

martinibluex: my SAT distribution was horrible, very similar to yours. i had a 780M, 620V. Is your higher section math or verbal?

math, same as you :)

hahah i'm 800CR 570M

i wish they'd mix and match scores from different people and not just different tests!

damn... we schould tutor each other or something

yup that is so true

kipling, how did you apply to harvard as a transfer twice? i thought they didnt allow that?

He/she probably applied like this:

1) As a senior in high school

2) As a freshman in college for sophomore standing

3) As a sophomore in college for junior standing

You can apply for transfer admission 2 times basically. The scenarios are #s 2 and 3 on the above list. Harvard/Ivies don't limit how many times you can apply for transfer, as long as you're applying with 2 years or less of credit.

oh ok. a question: my situation is a bit different as an international student, so i started college in spring 06. im applying for transfer for this fall 07 for sophomore standing. say if i get rejected, i wanted to apply again, but this time for junior standing. wont i have done a little more than 2 years by the time i matriculate when i apply as junior? i started college in spring 06 so its different. do you think they'll look past that? i also started college at 15. or is there another way for candidates who started college in spring to apply as junior? thanks.

martiniblue:

stanford seriously says that?

damn i messed up on sat II math in high school and got a frekin 590

it's also been so long since i've taken any serious math course that I'm afraid I can't even get that if I took it again now.
