Someone white/asian has to get in or else there'd be so such thing as a URM.

no research
no sports
no legacy

asian : o

White
No legacy
no national awards
class rank not top 5%
come from overrepresented area
so-so SAT I score (2180)

no legacy
no national awards, just commended student (didnt make semifinalist in that thing for the national achievement)
black, but parents have money
from EXTREMELY overrepresented area, maybe most overrepresented
low SAT score (2140)
low SAT IIs (660-730)

I really want to go to Harvard, but lookin at all the other stats, I want to cry

at least you are still a URM

i dont even think being black is going to help me

It will help you more than it will help me to be white living in a 98% white and rich town

Collegeboard, don't worry about it and just apply.

Anti-Hook = SAT SCORES!

SATI: 680 Math, 700 Writing ... (Critical Reading is ok - 740)

SATII: 660 US History, 640 Literature ... (Math2 is ok - 760)

tawny, we have a similar problem. i just wanted to say good luck.

My IIC score and my ECs. I haven't cured cancer and I'm not the best pianist in the world.

Anti-hooks:

I'm white

I'm from Jersey and I'm applying to local schools (including Upenn which is 20 minutes away)

Kids from my high school are notorious for being rejected at the ivies because of our high school profile.

My SAT IIs are subpar (literally, like 40th-50th percentiles)

I've got 0 honors because I spend so much time not being in competitions and rather enjoying my passions for myself. (Or, I just suck :))

My volunteering hours aren't too hot

I hate myself
and

I'm not a legacy

I have 3 ECs, all of which I've done since freshman year.

-Debate for a long time, state qualification and other good stuff, but I never quite got past state

-I started our chess club, it was more or less dead before me =)

-National Honor Society? It's actually very hard to get into at my school, but I heard that most colleges don't care because it's so easy in other schools

-I've played piano for a year, but I'm making progress, I guess...

What intimidates me is that some posters here have represented their country around the world; they've started up hospitals, speak 13 languages, tore down the Berlin wall, and other incredible things. I'm so unimportant compared to them, and I feel like I've wasted my high school life sleeping and watching TV...

That, and my essays aren't stellar. I can't write things under 500 words... >_<

Anti-hook
1. Upper-middle class Indian male from the Bay Area
2. Bad humanities grades (how stereotypical)

Anti-Hooks
1.) White Male from Long Island, NY... like that helps. :p

2.) Despite the fact I'm taking harder courses (6 AP's) than anyone in my class (about 180 kids), my GPA probably won't put me at the Top Ten in the Class of 2007 next year. So basically.... missing the "Harvardesque" GPA.

3.) Didn't invent a time machine, lol.

4.) Even though my brother went to Harvard, I heard that doesn't count as "legacy".

5.) Not a super athlete, heck, the only sport I did was fencing in 10th grade... for about a week or two.

Antihooks:
My ECs: They are all very common, show very little commitment and initiative. Same as my volunteer. Quantity but no quality.

oh, and I'm Asian.

I POOP on my Sat score! I would do anything to improve that biatc** of a score! (except study. i mean come on!)

I got accepted to Rice but deferred to Harvard

I got:
2 C's
4 B's

From my first year in High School, currently a sophomore but in the US system I would be a "junior". The rest are A's of course. But that doesn't make up for the loss I took (I was kind of a slacker back then). I'm Somalian.

white, C+ on mid year report, relatively low SAT IIs

Test scores. But, maybe not. I retook my Spanish SAT II, got a 720 :-).
Took the Math IIC got a 750 :-). Now, my scores are 700M, 600V, 610W on SAT I, and 720 Spanish, 750 IIC, 650 IC are my highes SAT IIs. I took the ACT on the 11th, and my practices were generally a composite of 32-34. So, IDK, maybe I have some miniscule chance now.
