Harvard Apartments...

Does Harvard have university owned apartments or apartments near Harvard that the school has a deal with the landlord or something? If you do not live on campus, where do some students live?

if so, how much is rent at one of these apartments? are they nice? any links?

Undergrad? Look at craigslist........otherwise:

Unless you're married, I can't imagine why you'd want to live off-campus. Rents in Cambridge are very high until you get really far out and then they're just high.

You probably wouldn't go to Harvard if you wanted to live off-campus. The residential college housing is a keystone of the Harvard experience.

The Cambridge/Sommerville rental market is sky high and Harvard does not subsidize apartments. A room in a shared apartment costs at least $700 per month and it will not necessarily be close to transportation (which adds another $50 or so per month).
Harvard pretty much expects all students to live on campus and makes provision for them to do so. My S has sections which are held in the evening. And there are tons of events that are also scheduled in the evening and throughout weekdays and weekends. There are also lots of House-based activities.

Harvard does have some Harvard-affiliated housing, but the rates are not subsidized for students -- students in my program were told that Harvard considers rate subsidizing to be a form of financial aid. (I also think that the affiliated housing may only be for graduate students.)

I would not recommend living in an apartment off-campus -- a decent one-bedroom apartment in Cambridge will generally cost upward of $1200 per month, and often significantly upward.

EDIT: Cross-posted with marite, sorry. :)

Harvard, P'ton, Penn......students do live off campus in apts/condos. While I concur that the cost of off campus housing exceeds dorm living, there is a ready market and students do indeed live off.

On campus is approx $7500 for 9 months. Room+board.
