Harvard Class of 2021 SCEA Applicants Discussion

@ap012199 from what I have been reading here and there, if they add to your application in a positive way (e.g., scores above 750), I think submitting 2 or 3 may be helpful. Once you get to the gate with the necessary GPA and ACT and/or SAT scores, any additional information that bolster your application should be helpful to get your through the gate. Think of it this way. There is no where that it states extra curricular and/or volunteer activity is required to apply to Harvard or other tippy top schools, yet many report them to help their overall application so that the adcoms can get a better picture of you and what you bring to the table. At the end of the day, just present your best self and let the chips fall where they may. Apply broadly to schools you see yourself attending…good luck!

@ap012199

IDK what admissions committees do with ACT subscores, but my lowest subscore was a 31 on math, and I’m a stellar math student (5 AP calc ab, took advanced courses). I have a 760 Math II score that I’m submitting. I also have a 33 ACT composite (33.25). If adcom looks at my math subscore and my subject test score, I would hope that they overlook the 31 subscore and favor the 760?

@hhjjlala I think they will use the 760 more heavily in admissions since it is usually a better testament to your math skills. That being said, they will consider everything that is sent in.

Are the Harvard supplementary essays on common app the correct ones ?(exactly the same as last year)???
Which one you guys plan on picking ?

@CrimsonZa I guess so… We can choose a topic of our choice, but I’m probably going to talk about how I would contribute to the lives of classmates in advancing Harvard’s mission.

The supplementary essay is not required. Remember that! Unless you truly believe your application is incomplete without an additional essay, you shouldn’t feel forced to write another just to make yourself look better. They’re probably going to skim through your second essay as they receive more than 6,000 applications early.

@ap012199 I’ll send you my essay once I check it for grammar and you can send yours.

I was looking over the Common App today and saw that Harvard doesn’t have any family specific questions within its application. Does this just mean that they look on the common app section about where your parents attended college to figure out whether the applicant has legacy or not?

I don’t know if they ever did, at least since they started using the Common App. Anything they need to know about family is covered in the general family section.

Do I have a chance?

Following are my stats:

GPA: 3.95 (UW) 4.6(W)
SAT: 1600 Essay 22/24
ACT: 36 Essay 32/36
SAT Subject: 800 (US History) 800 (MATH 2) Physics (780)
IB (Econ): 7
AP Chem: 5
AP Calc BC: 5
AP Calc AB: 5
AP Micro Econ: 5
AP Macro Econ: 5
AP Bio: 5
AP French: 5

IB Full Diploma Candidate

EC’s: Science Bowl Champion 2016
New York Senator Intern
Speech
Robotics
Volunteer For Refugees Assistance
Volunteer For a Scientific Organization
President of a school club

@jambajuice1 Solid, solid stats! All your hard work certainly shows. What’s going to get you through the gate at this point are your “soft” stats (recommendations, essay, and an ability to show the adcom that you are more than these numbers). Don’t relax now…focus on your essay and keep up your grades and EC’s. The best of luck!

How important are the answers you put for the Harvard Questions in determining admissions.
(Talking about the academic/vocational/activity questions)

My Common Application and Harvard Supplement are done. Tests are done. Ready to apply SCEA once I get back to school & update my GPA!

@HPhelpbot123

What did you write you supplement about?

Hey guys. I scored a 1440(700CR 740M) which relative to all your SAT scores is pretty low.
If I take subject tests in October and submit my application, do you think H will wait to receive my Nov scores before evaluating my app?

“What would you want your future roommate to know about you.” Thought it would be a nice way to introduce myself to the admissions people.

Hey I did the same one! @HPhelpbot123 it was a fun one to write

@CrimsonZa I believe that they only consider the November test date if you’re applying RD not SCEA.
@bluekou23 I wouldn’t exactly describe it as fun but it definitely wasn’t the worst essay to write haha

@CrimsonZa

They only take the subject tests in November I think.

Is anyone else thinking of doing the booklist supplement? It seems easy enough for me especially since I’m an avid reader and have read quite a lot of books over the past year

I think I’m going to write a 250~400 word essay for the supplement.
