Harvard Class of 2021 Waitlisted Discussion

@Dontskipthemoose oh okay. I think the people who got rescinded were rescinded a while ago before Harvard announced their crazy high yield. Harvard is still overenrolled even with the rescinded students

Yes, the students were rescinded in April, so admissions had plenty of time to fill those slots–or leave those beds empty to manage high yield.

Been nearly a month and no new decisions?!

I received an award from my high school recently. How should I go about uploading it? I could email it to my regional admissions officer or I could go through the portal. It probably won’t matter but I do not think there is any harm in doing so.

@doorrealthe The portal would probably be the safest way, although I can’t imagine it would do much good at this point. It’s been so long since the last update I seriously doubt they’re considering any other z-listers.

Unless you received a Tony Award on Sunday, or something similar in prestige, I’d let it go. I’m sure everyone on the WL received an award at their school.

@doorrealthe I don’t understand why the older members of CC always discourage people from sending in updates and extra information. Have you heard about the girl who was WL at Harvard and sent in 13 extra recommendations and was accepted off the waitlist? That might have been a little extreme, but I can’t imagine your extra info doing any harm. Just send in your award through the portal.

Just being realistic. The odds of anyone getting off the WL at this point is zero, IMO. Yes, it won’t harm, but at this point, s/he needs to love the school that loves him/her back. This would be time better spent.

@skieurope I definitely love the school I’m enrolled at right now. Just curious as to why Harvard has kept me and whoever else on the waitlist for so long, especially if they are only giving deferred admission. Why do you think they are doing this?

Good question. I wish I knew the answer.

^^ I’m not sure why Harvard has not announced the closing of it’s waitlist but they probably will do so shortly, as the vast majority of US high schools close at the end of June for the summer months. That means that a student’s final transcript and proof of graduation (both of which Harvard’s registrar requires before allowing a student on-campus) will soon be unobtainable for most waitlisted applicants.

Because they simply don’t have the time or resources
to wade through all the additional paperwork.

They truly can get irritated when candidates don’t follow
instructions and attempt to gain advantage over those
applicants who do follow instructions.

Apply SCEA if you already have outstanding achievements, apply regular action if you expect some
to come your way later in senior year.

Still nothing yet… @Yuchentu you get an update?

@doorrealthe Not yet. A girl from my school who is also on the waitlist hasn’t heard back either.

@Yuchentu June 26th and still nothing. Harvard said in their waitlist letter that they normally have all decisions made by the end of June

@doorrealthe: Please do yourself a favor and telephone Admissions tomorrow or Wednesday (Given the Fourth of July long weekend, Admissions my be on vacation Thursday and Friday of this week and Monday of next week) and point-blank ask them: (a) Will they be taking students off the waitlist this year? and (b) If not, why have they not released applicants still on the waitlist? IMHO, it seems that is the only way you will get closure and be able to move on.

@gibby I actually called them a few weeks ago, and all they told me was that students accepted off the waitlist for next year will be notified sometime. Should I call again?

Y E E E E E E E E E E E S S S S S S S S S S S S S !

And SPECIFICALLY ask about YOURSELF – do NOT ask general-type questions. For example, have you asked . . .

  1. According to the portal, I'm still on the waitlist. Can I speak to an Admissions Officer to confirm that I'm still on the waitlist and that it's not a clerical error.
  2. My high school is closing for the summer, and therefore my graduation records will be unavailable until after Harvard freshman are due on campus. Will this effect your decision?
  3. I would like some element of closure, and from what I've read, Harvard is oversubscribed. Therefore, what's going on? Why are waitlisted students, like myself, being made to wait until July or August for a decision?
  4. Can you please let me know if I'm at the top of the waitlist or at the bottom of the waitlist?
  5. Would it help you make a decision if I came for an on-campus interview?
  6. Can I supply any additional information that would enable you to make a decision on my application?
  7. What specifically will allow the Admissions Committee to move forward with my application?

You really have nothing to lose from asking those pointed questions, which are so much better than open-ended general questions which elicit responses like “Students accepted off the waitlist for next year will be notified sometime.” In addition, it will allow you to have some piece-of-mind and a relaxing summer!

@gibby was just about to call them when I noticed it was 5pm and I checked the Harvard portal. It had just updated and I was rejected! Not surprised or mad, just relieved. Thanks for your advice!

@doorrealthe: Thanks for the update. Best of luck to you at Dartmouth!
