I called their admissions office. They said you can apply there EA and to ANY other public institution. I’m doing UVA, Michigan, and Harvard. So, yes.

Why did you have trouble with that? The Harvard website is 100% clear that if you apply to Harvard EA you can also apply to any public university’s nonbinding early admission program.

^ Okay back off, lol. I somehow managed to have a problem understanding that too. I thought it was only for public schools with ROLLING admissions. I have no idea why I thought that. So according to TheFlounder, I can def apply to U Michigan EA!? Yes! This makes me so happy!

I apologize. I didn’t realize that Harvard had changed what its website says yet again, and they introduced new layers of confusion. You all were perfectly justified in being confused. A few weeks ago, it was clear that a non-binding Early Action application to any public college was OK. Now it isn’t so clear, but I am pretty sure they didn’t mean to change that rule, just to make clear that you couldn’t apply non-binding EA to any private universities.

The Harvard admissions office is not very thoughtful about how they describe their rules.

Haha, well thank you. I was just kidding around. But yes I was in fact confused. I just sent them an email, but in all honesty they really seem to be horrid at responding to emails. So we will have to wait and see!
Thanks guys:)

There’s really no excuse for having it be unclear. Harvard seems to have the same policy as Stanford, or almost, and Stanford’s language is much less confusing. They could have avoided 90% of their problems by simply cutting and pasting Stanford’s language. The other thing they could have done would have been to come up with 10 logical questions that their applicants might ask, and make certain it was clear what the answers were. Questions like “Can I apply early to my home state flagship?”, “Can I apply EA to Michigan (and I live in NY)?”, and “Can I apply EA to MIT?” are pretty high on that list.

I think that if you have to pay your application fee, it behooves Harvard to be clear about its policy. Call them up and get an answer! You won’t get penalized for it.

Harvard’s new language would seem to prohibit EA applications to public universities, but JHS is right, it’s still somewhat confusing. I hope if anyone gets an answer to his/her email about this question, they will post it here.

I definitely will…if that ever happens. Honestly they do really make me mad sometimes, I emailed them a similar question in April. Still waiting here. I think calling may be the best option. ahhn. I will do that later…

so it says on their website to send your materials in by october 15th if you can so they can start creating your profile. is it any advantage to send in your materials before the actual deadline of nov 1st.
