Harvard Hopeful (I'll chance you back if you ask for it)

I'm an Asian male Junior in an affluent northeastern suburban neighborhood. Chances for Harvard, MIT, Yale, Wharton, Columbia, Duke, Caltech, Brown, Dartmouth, U of Chicago, and Georgetown will be appreciated.

Ranking: Somewhere in top 10 of a class of 300

Classes Taken: I have taken the most rigorous schedule possible in my high school and then some. I have completed my high school’s math curriculum and will be taking a math course at a college for my senior year.

SAT: 2360
SAT II’s: IIC 800, US Hist 800 (will take a science in October)

AP’s: 5’s on 8 exams

School EC’s: Class President, Member of the Principal’s Cabinet, Founder and 3-year President of Sierra Student Coalition, Varsity Debate Team, Varsity Wrestling, Two-Year President of Math Club (Varsity), President of Tutoring Club

Out of School EC’s: Columbia Science Honors Program, New Jersey Scholars Program

Community Service: 200+ hours at Nature Center
100+ hours tutoring children in an after school program

Honors worth mentioning: Two-time AMC-12 school winner
2nd place overall in the county math league
1st place overall in school math team
55th place in North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad
4th place at Andrushkiw math competition
1st place at county high school writing contest
17th in state (3rd in county) for Bio in Merck State Science Day
7th place in state for my grade on AMC-12

So it sorta sucks that you are an Asian because you look exactly like a stereotypical hard working Asian (Sorry, i know this sounds really bad.) So, I think, in your essays you should talk about Varsity Wrestling since its such a like non Asian thing to do.

Harvard, MIT, Yale, Wharton, Caltech - These are all reaches as they are for everybody. However, if you write good essays I feel like you will get into one.
Columbia - low Reach
Duke - match
Brown - high match
Dartmouth - low reach
U of Chicago - It’s all about the essays. People with better stats who have treated Uchicago as a safety have not gotten in because they dont write good essays.
Georgetown - Low match.

get safeties.

Chance back:?: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/748339-chances-top-schools-will-chance-back.html

NJSP woo hoo hollaaaa

what are you doing on college confidential? go do some work aka get your research paper finished.

you’re definitely on track for all of these schools. Also, if being Asian worries you that much, dont specify your race. simply don’t fill that part in on the application. it is OPTIONAL. meaning they can be racially blind to you. if not then go for it.
Harvard, MIT, Yale, Caltech - reaches, always are always will be.
Columbia - match ( lower ivies)
Duke - match(lower ivies)
Brown -reach
Dartmouth - reach
U of Chicago -crapshoot, learn to write, or keep on chugging.
Georgetown - I agree here low match

perhaps a few safeties are in order?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/743096-chance-lifetime.html

Wharton has many applicants like you, in terms of scores, APs, etc. In fact, I think I might have been one of few of their applicants who was not in the top 10%, but in the top 20%. Granted, I did attend a relatively prestigious prep school, but in the end, it is truly the essays which bring you to the front of the pack. Definitely talk about your passions, and you might even think about writing an essay based on NJSP…most applicants will not have had such a rich learning and maturing experience and it is important that you consider this advantage when applying to colleges.

You seem very normal compared to the rest of the applicant pool. I’d say reaches for all the ivies esp. for HYPM. Coul you possibly give us where you stand in the group of top ten? (with GPA and such?)

I think that you have a good chance at some of these schools:) As the previous posters have explained, it’s difficult to predict people for Ivies, regardless of their statistics. However, I would say you have a good chance of getting accepted to a few. Good luck!

Well, I think you certainly have a chance! What is your GPA?

Please chance me:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/749947-could-i-get-into-any-these-colleges-2-3-2-4-gpa.html

For Ivies: Reach as for everybody, but I would be surprised if you didn’t get into one.

You have as good of a chance to get into Harvard as anybody. Excellent grades / SAT / leadership / EC’s might be a bit ‘normal’ but are still good.
Write some unique essays [easier said that done haha].

I wouldn’t be surprised if you got into Harvard!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/746539-chance-asian-artist.html

“Harvard, MIT, Yale, Wharton, Columbia, Duke, Caltech, Brown, Dartmouth, U of Chicago, and Georgetown” These are ALL extremely hard schools to get into. You may be perfectly qualified to apply, and may have what these schools are looking for but so will many other applicants. They’re all reaches based mainly on the acceptance rates of said schools. You have the right profile, but an actual chance (I think) would just be guesses unless you chose to apply ED to some place.

I’m also wondering why you’re applying where you are- you seem to have a math/science bent, but these schools all have very varied atmospheres. Caltech and MIT are both great schools, but opposite sides of the country. Yale and Harvard are rivals. Wharton is nothing like Brown. I’m not complaining- I like variety - but perhaps you could narrow this list down, and add more reasonable schools that you’ll be more likely to get into? Perhaps Virginia Tech?

Chance back please: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/749292-chance-girl-az.html :)

I think you look strong for the mid tier ivies and below. For the very top schools being Asian and from NY/NJ without world class ECs is going to make it tough.

It’s going to be tought, because you’re the typical stereotype asian. You have the scores, the grades, EC’s too. Focus on sth. different in your application, that might help.

Also find more matches/safeties. Every school except Georgetown U Chiacago are reaches. We Asians are just over represented.

Chance Back?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/745578-what-colleges-should-asian-germany-look-chance-back.html

If you apply to all those schools i think youll get into 3 or 4. OR you may get into all of them. At that high of a level, its gonna be your essays (especially at UChicago) and things that make you stand out that will make the difference i think. Its also gonna take some luck. A friend of mine was accepted to Harvard and waitlisted for Plan II at UT Austin. Good luck!

Chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/746985-chance-me-california-schools-only-2-public-i-chance-back-i-promise.html

Hmm well ill just breakdown your app into pieces:

Grades/Rank- Good enough…prbly not gonna WOW anyone though…if you can get Val and Sal go for it

Test Scores- Great…no problems here

ECs- Pritty standard for ivies

Community Service- Meh…its not crazy important…but you are probably slightly below average at some of the better ivies

Awards- I think its the weakest part of your app (unless Im missing something and I might b)…probably normal for like the cornell/darmouth ivies but below average for HYPMS

So, I think you are probably going to get into most or all of the 2nd and 3rd tier ivies. The nonivies on your list should all be easy for you. However, Chicago is kinda a crap shoot. Regardless, I really dont like that school (really grade deflated), but if you write good essays you will get in. Now, Wharton, Harvard, Yale, MIT, and Caltech are all kinda reaches. If I had to guess, you will get into 2 of them. Being Asian unfairly hurts you here…but ya youll go far.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/750106-chance-me-hyps-i-will-chance-you.html

Wharton,no idea
Harvard, MIT, Yale Caltech - all reaches for einstein but with a little luck youll def. get at least one
if you write good essays I feel like you will get into one.
Columbia - low/mid Reach…need good essay too
Duke - match for sure
Brown - low low reach
Dartmouth - High match
U of Chicago - I second above youNEED a stand out essay something very creative and different
Georgetown - YOUR IN this is a safety for you

:)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/881656-chance-me-new-york-university-northwestern-university-2.html#post1064341721

I agree with all of the above - you should probably get some safeties. I mean, your stats and everything are GREAT but those are top schools, and you never know what can happen.

I’d say that all the Ivies are reaches, simply because they’re what they are. Brown and Columbia might be low reaches. As for the others, they’re all high matches/low reaches except for UChicago (if your essays were good) and Georgetown.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/883226-chance-meek-young-hopeful-will-chance-back.html

This is what will keep these schools reaches for you, despite your stats.

Do you guys realize this thread was bumped from 2009?

I highly doubt the OP is seeking chance responses at this point lol.
