I received an e-mail today about setting up an alumni interview at the Harvard Club in N.Y. To anyone who has been to one of these, what’s it like? What sort of questions do they ask? I don’t own a suit and don’t have money to rent one, so how should I dress?
Bump
The Harvard Club of NY has a dress code: https://www.hcny.com/files/website%20DRESS%20CODE.pdf
Although this link is several years old, you should be prepared for almost any question: http://www.soootellmeaboutyourself.com/2009/12/current-interview-questions-harvard.html. The best advice is to go in and be yourself on your best day. Have a conversation; be honest, open, and forthright. Ask questions. What did your interviewer concentrate in? What extracurricular activities did they do? What professor do they remember the most? Who knows, maybe you will find common ground with them and talk about how both your interests intersect.
Yes, whatever you do, keep a conversation and EYE CONTACT. My sister bombed her interview for Yale because she couldn’t do that. And she had the stats for it (though not the money.)
My D got an email yesterday about an alumni interview for Harvard. Is this a positive sign or does Harvard interview everybody?
Harvard tries to schedule an alumni interview every domestic applicant: https://college.harvard.edu/admissions/application-process/what-we-look/interviews
@albert69 I’m curious how you found out what your sister’s interview problem was.
@JustOneDad
My mom was there on the sidelines and saw it. They met at a coffee shop. It wasn’t like it was the end of the universe, she’s doing fine academically and is going to one of the top 10 colleges for law school, so it wasn’t like her career went to shambles because she didn’t get into a big name school for undergrad. I don’t know how much of an impact the interview had on her admission; all I am doing is giving some regular interview advice for the OP.
Update: Interview went extremely well. We hardly talked about Harvard.
Awesome, OP! I hope you make it in.
