<p>You don't. They schedule one with you.</p>
<p>Usually, after you've sent in your app, they'll give your contact info to an alumni in your area and she/he will get in touch. If you applied EA then you should have gotten called by now, or at least get a call very soon...</p>
<p>I'm under the impression that they're not at all important, but that a bad interview/recommendation can hurt you.</p>
<p>If you are applying EA, and you haven't had your interview, you are supposed to call Harvard. Right now, EA people are getting priority in the scheduling of interviews.</p>
<p>Some alumni from Harvard will contact you to set up an appointment. My recollection from my D's experience last year (RD) was that it happened during Christmas vacation.</p>
<p>As for how important--it's something that you don't want to screw up by being a real jerk or a tight-lipped clam. Other than that, I doubt it is weighted much.</p>
<p>Correction: If you haven't had your Harvard interview BY December 1 and you're applying EA, you're supposed to call.</p>
