Harvard or IIT

@Nikhil and @quiverfox, An IIT education will totally cost you 7500 USD for all 4 years. In the Ivy Leagues, even if you get financial aid, as a parent the least contribution one may have to make can be much larger, say 10K per year. For a middle class Indian family this is a huge burden.

@sramas Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t financial aid offered by the ivies meet all demonstrated need? According to Harvard’s website, they cover tuition, room, board, insurance, books, personal expenses and travel expenses(upto $5,200). I’m not sure I understand what the additional 10k might be required for. In addition to the aid awarded towards personal expenses, a figure that is carefully calculated by the university by taking all factors into consideration, $10,000 might be considered a luxurious allowance even by American standards.

Stop feeding the ■■■■■. It is highly doubtful OP has / will get into either. He talks hypothetically of aid later on after saying 90% . Anyone serious about IIT will not waste time 6 days before Mains on college confidential.

Also it is completely false that there is a minimum your family will have to pay. They don’t lie on their websites. The actual aid packages turn out to be over and above the cost of attendance and take into account things like flights , insurance ,computer purchase, miscellaneous ( read let’s have fun ) expenditure.

If you still don’t believe me,write 32 billion. Multiply it by 55. Write the figure with all those zeros. That’s the kind of money Harvard has at its disposal. If you need money , Harvard will give it to you.

I am sorry guys my account was used by one of my friend , I’ve not started this thread .In fact , I’ve started my 12th class yesterday only(I was in 11th when he started this thread) .
I logged in today after 2 months and saw this . Sorry…!!!
Does any one know how to delete a thread…?
Sorry…Again…!!

@Sam213 There is no doubt the OP is a ■■■■■, regardless of what he says ^. But the topic is a very relevant, albeit over-discussed one. Since you’ve already broken into the ivy league, I think we must take your word on FA packages to be true. :D

Guys I am so sorry once again …but believe me it was not me. I’ve requested CC to delete this post.

sramas probably knows what he is talking about. IIT tuition plus living expenses can’t be more than $7500 for ALL four years. When Harvard says it is meeting full financial need, it decides what your need is. For example, every student is expected to put in a bit of their moolah – say $2k. (Completely funded scholarship such as — is this true – Tata fellowship at cornell or any other merit scholarship is different story and is meant from a non-need perspective).

Go to Harvard honestly… Its the best you can get and plus you can always come back to india but if you lose this opportunity you don’t know if you could ever go back to harvard or not…
Anyway All the best :)

Students with parents whose annual income is less than $60,000 or so aren’t expected to make any contribution to college cost is what the Harvard website says. And I don’t think they lie about that

Not only do they claim to meet full need , they just offered FA over the COA for someone I know. If you need it ,you’ll get it. If you dont , you wont

Is this an April fools joke?

Can we like end this boring discussion…let the OP go where he wants to.

Felt like banging my head on the wall after reading this…!!

OP was a ■■■■■, or, as he claims, his friend was.

The decision is a no-brainer; Anybody who gets into Harvard is smart enough to make this decision - the debate between IIT and Harvard is non-existent, Harvard wins hands down.

STOP HAVING MISCONCEPTIONS ON FINANCIAL AID! I’m in the class of 2017 at Brown (that’s right, I’m joining later this year), and take my word for it - NEED BASED FINANCIAL AID IS A REALITY. When the Ivies say they meet 100% demonstrated need (all but Cornell, actually), they mean it. I am a recipient of 100% aid at Brown. Every single dollar from the sticker price of $60,460 is on Brown. The only cost my family is meeting is flight tickets to the US and the Health Insurance premium.

I would have thought if you’re genius enough to get into BOTH IIT and Harvard, that too with 90% aid… surely you can obviously see that Harvard is the (much) better option…
No college in India is even in the top 100 of the world. Harvard is in the top 10. Period.

I got through Harvard this year and I can re-affirm the verity of what the above poster says. I have got $66,350 in aid, which includes $4200 for flight expenses, $2000 for health insurance and ~ $3500 for personal expenses, all of which is over and above the basic cost of attendance.
Also, as an aside, let us not hate on IIT! I just returned from the Harvard visiting program for admitted kids and can safely say that choosing Harvard over IIT for engineering would be pure silly. Engineering departments at Harvard, apart from Comp Sci, are, for all intents and purposes, entirely non existent.

Hmm. Don’t know about that TheBlueMarble, Cornell gave me much better FA than Columbia. They’re being pretty good with the estimates and even have a detailed breakdown of what can change in the next 3 years if income/assets go up/down. Columbia’s was just a sort of take-it-or-leave-it type of package. I agree though, need-based aid is a reality.

Gosh bro. Harvard and iit?!? Omgg. Completely irrelevant, but help me get into Harvard? Please? What sat score did you have? Lol can you like post your r
