Accepted at Harvard with 90% Aid and I'm sure that I'll get in top 100 in JEE . Where should I go ?

Harvard no brainer. Remember, 5000 thousand indians graduate from IIT every year. But only 5 from india have the honor of graduating from harvard. All prestige aside, the opportunities at harvard are EXPONENTIALLY greater than those at IIT. GO TO HARVARD!

Go to Harvard. Doesn’t matter which IIT you get into.
I am sure you know that you can take classes at MIT while attending Harvard. You won’t get that kind of opportunity anywhere else.

When I opened this, I kinda thought this was a joke. I think you’re serious. Harvard. Duh.

IIT definitely:);)

HARVARD it is.
IIT stands nowhere when compared to Harvard.

WHAT A GUY. :p

you devious miscreants are tricking him !!:)

Please be serious IIT or Harvard, this is important to several of us too…

serious!=0?iit:h

IIT for anything engineering related. Harvard engineering is terrible and will get you nothing. Harvard is better for the sciences in general though and will give you more opportunities.

I have been saying the VERY same thing!!

Ok. So it depends on what you really want to do later in life.

Firstly, money is out of the question - since Harvard would’ve met your need. :)

If you’re not really sure and would like to explore - it’s Harvard hands down. Harvard Engg may not be the most reputed, but it still is HARVARD ENGG and you can’t go wrong with it. Haha!!

If you’re hell bent on becoming — say a Software Engg and know for sure that that is your destiny, then maybe IIT is a better proposition than Harvard.

But in both cases, you can always go on to do your post grad from MIT, Stanford, etc. And if you’re planning on doing that, then the choice boils down to this ----

What kind of a person are you???

Will you thrive among the ultra-intellectual Harvard students?(Though upon close interaction, they aren’t as smart as they make themselves to be - but they still are). Are you inclined towards enjoying life and at the same time working your a** off to top your class? Do you wish to develop into a complete man?(No, I’m not advertising for Raymond.) Do you want to read about the Incas and learn Hebrew alongside your Engineering degree? If yes, then choose Harvard.

If it’s the opposite. And you’d rather be focused on studies. Then IIT.

You can’t go wrong with either. And generally, one would close his/her eyes and choose Harvard over IIT. Just because of the myriad of opportunities Harvard throws at you.

Also, since you’ll have to pay your deposit BY May 1st. And IIT results don’t come out until June end. You should pay the Harvard deposit. Cause maybe, for some unforeseen reason - you won’t get the rank you need for your preferred course at your preferred IIT. (And then you won’t have to make a choice!! Problem Solved. )

-----DISCLAIMER : This is only an opinion and if someone doesn’t agree with it. It’s fine. I don’t want to start of another of those IIT vs Ivies debates with senseless bashing of each other. ---------

I agree with rishav on most parts…Unless you would want to work right out of college…UG would not matter at all.

It is not for no reason that Harvard is consistently ranked among the top universities in the world. The Indian Institutes of Technology(all of them) on the other hand find no place in the top 100. If you got into Harvard with 90% aid, you’d be an idiot turn it down, no offense. Although Harvard isn’t as good as some of the other ivies for engineering, it is still a great choice compared to the IITs. At least 75 Nobel laureates are affiliated to Harvard university. The IITs, however, have failed to produce a single Nobel laureate. This is a very simplistic, yet reliable, indicator of the academic quality of the universities in question. Merely being in the presence of professors who are doing cutting edge research and not merely teaching(like at the IITs) can be extremely inspiring, I’m told by friends at Harvard.

I think the Indian Institute of Science is much better, academic quality-wise, than the IITs. However, the IISc doesn’t offer a bachelor’s degree in engineering.

It does nikhil…I was going to opt for that too… until UCB Harvard may be a top ranked ‘no-brainer’ to some…but I finf IIT’s much more luring for an Indian…

**This is my opinion…

I think the aura that surrounds the IITs is based mainly on the promise of a good job after you graduate. The other thing that contributes to this aura is the extremely competitive admission process. It is also based on notions of prestige since the IITs are much better known than Harvard, in India. Nothing is greater, in the eyes of the average middle class family, than getting into the Indian Institutes of Technology.

**This is my opinion…

I am part of a lower middle class family…so yes.it does.

Since ivies such as Harvard meet full demonstrate need for all admitted students, wouldn’t it be a better option?

Depends really…harvard’s awesome and stuff…everything seems better there…BUT i still like it here:)
