Harvard Pot Smokers

Court documents released to the public following last Wednesday’s arraignment of four Harvard undergraduates charged with drug violations revealed that police had been monitoring a DeWolfe room for about three weeks before the night the students were allegedly found using marijuana.

According to the report, Simmons did not deny that there were drugs in his room.

“It was clear that we were smoking in here but we just smoked it all,” Simmons allegedly said.

Spellman found “a decent amount of what appeared to be marijuana leaves and stems,” in Simmons’ room, according to the report. Simmons allegedly pointed out a black container in his closet, which he said contained his supply of marijuana.

“It is only an eigth [of an ounce],” Simmons allegedly said.

Gardner initially denied having drugs in his room, Spellman wrote, but after police saw marijuana leaves in open sight, Gardner showed the officer his supply that he said he kept in his freezer.

Gordon allegedly admitted that he had drugs in his room, as well as a large glass bong, smoking pipes, and a bag marked, “Hash Plant.”

Spellman also stated that he found a medical cannabis container and a prescription bottle for sleeping pills in Gordon’s room.

Wonder if they were inspired by (the movie) "How High"? I started this thread to discuss the occurrence of drugs @ Harvard. What have you heard, what are the statistics, what's the narcotics top-10 and so on. I'm not into drugs or interested in using any sort of it, fyi.

I can't give you statistics; I can only tell you what I've personally encountered. I'm not sure you could find reasonably statistics. So few people get caught. The guys in that article were just reckless/unlucky.

I've encountered quite a few students who smoke pot--but when I say quite a few, I mean quite a few compared to the number of students that I expected to encounter. It's actually a relatively insignificant fraction of the population, in my experience; and even less significant is the number of students who do anything beyond pot.

The scary thing is... the police had nothing better to do than monitor a college dorm for THREE WEEKS?!?! Give me a break...

sure they did but the opportunity to arrest "dumb" smart kids was the hook.

The link isn't working for me. So is the guy gettin expelled or what? If so that completely sucks.

What a waste of police resources.

what i really hate about his article is how the cops were 'tipped off' by someone. honestly, why would you do that?

drugs, especially weed and coke, are at every campus...yes, even harvard! i can't believe that the cops even cared enough to make an arrest, let alone monitor his room for so long.

I got the impression that their neighbors in DeWolfe were very annoyed by the constant weed smell. The smokers might be in big trouble; because there was a daycare below them, they could be subject to selling drugs in a school zone penalties.

I second SaxFreq's description of marijuana on campus. Coke is definitely here too, but only in certain circles (see newstalk archives for details :-P).

justforgetme,

Yeah, they face minimum sentences of two years, IIRC. And not only that, but although all the students were charged with drug-related offenses, only three of them were charged with committing these offenses in a school zone. I can't decide whether I think it's because the fourth student didn't live in the room, because she was white, or because of something entirely unknown to me.

America can be a strange place sometimes.

Geez, if these kids' neighbors had a problem, they should have said something to the kids themselves. Going to the cops is not neccecary.

For all we know, they may have. Furthermore, confronting people who are breaking the law is a risky proposition; going to the cops is a perfectly legitimate option. IIRC, you're not even supposed to smoke tobacco in DeWolfe.

Lesson: don't believe that you're invincible or immune from the law just because you're a college student. Proceed with caution.

two years for possession? that's ridiculous!!

nah i think the two years came from selling in a school zone

i recently came back from visiting harvard (for a model UN conference) and i was surprised that harvard kids just smoke pot and chill on a regular weeknight, or at least the ones i met when i was on campus.

it totally destroyed my impression that harvard kids were these good, smart, hard-working students. i guess they live college life just like how some kids at every other college does.

kfc-There are definitely some students like that. However, the majority definitely does those kinds of things only on the wekends (if at all).

Based on the article, there doesn't seem to be much to substantiate the intent to distribute charge, which is a relief--I know one of those kids.

Recently a guy in Mather got busted and pretty clearly had intent to sell (he had harder drugs in very large quantities); he was also within a school zone (an elementary school). It seems obvious to me that he was much more likely selling to Harvard students than to first graders, but tell it to the law...

Phoenixy-I thought I saw one of the people charged quoted in the Crimson as saying they were in the room buying a bag from one of the people who lived there. I have no idea why they'd admit this, but that seems like it would prove distribution.

Spellman wrote that three weeks later, he walked into the parking lot adjacent to 10 Dewolfe St. and “could smell a strong odor of marijuana emanating from an open second floor window"

How do you smell pot smoke from a second floor window if you're standing at least 10 feet below the window? Pot smoke isn't that strong.

Oh yes it is haha.
