I'm wondering how prevalent marijuana use is among Harvard students and what the consequences are.

I don’t know the exact penalties, de facto or de jure, but I do know they’re harsh. As for the prevalence, I can’t give you numbers but if you want to find people who smoke pot, you can find them. It isn’t nearly as widespread as drinking, but I don’t think it’s looked down upon too much. I haven’t found many “potheads” in the sense that for some people, all that they do is smoke pot.

I actually wanted to know this too, also for many other Ivy schools.

I read an article (forgot where it was located) that said that while the use of pot is frowned upon, the administration and campus law enforcement do not bestow harsh punishment on those who are caught, nor turn them in to the local law enforcement.

Their mindset on the drug use is that how harmful is the habit? Should the user be punished for their own actions that do not result in harm to other persons or property? If abuse (not to be confused with use) is prelevant in a persons life, they will step in to make sure everything is going okay. They might assign the person to seek help with a program, some can be found on campus.

Otherwise, most of the referals and arrests that are made are due to the unlawful behaviour while under the influence, not the use of the drug itself.

Marijuana is a perfect plant;) But is it illegal in MA?? Ahhh Whole of US・・・

I find it surprising that despite the high-caliber of Harvard students that some still choose to engage in an activity that is completely devoid of decency.

It’s illegal everywhere in the United States…

Mifune, I feel EXACTLY the same way!

I don’t see how it’s worse than drinking.

Contestable. What makes it indecent, if I may ask, and what makes it any less decent than, say, watching television? Perhaps we should talk in the CC Cafe.

I agree with whartonite1.

It’s actually not a criminal offense in Massachusetts to possess one ounce or less of pot. ([News article](http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/01/marijuana_decri_1.html))

Right, it’s a civil offense.

Anyway, they tell us that they’re a lot tougher on pot than they are on alcohol due to an incident involving marijuana in the recent past that resulted in a student death.

I highly doubt that. You can’t OD on marijuana. Source?

[Places that have decriminalized non-medical cannabis in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Legalization of non-medical cannabis in the United States - Wikipedia)

States/cities cannot render weed legal, but they can take the initiative to establish weed possession as the least serious misdemeanor and lowest priority for enforcement, essentially making it legal without saying it. Several places have done this.

I don’t understand why people associate smoking pot or drinking with a lack of decency - or, more so, a lack of intelligence. I truly don’t see the problem with anyone smoking pot, as long as they’re not affecting anyone else. Sure, it’s illegal. But it’s also relatively relaxing and fun. And how does someone else’s smoking pot bother YOU?

I know of many incredibly intelligent people (i.e., those at the schools seemingly 90% of CCers want to attend) who smoke pot just to relax. It’s really no big deal.

Quote: “Contestable. What makes it indecent, if I may ask, and what makes it any less decent than, say, watching television? Perhaps we should talk in the CC Cafe.”

Smoking leads to lung cancer for starters… Second, marijuana has well-documented effects of impaired learning, memory, motor coordination, reaction time, and increased risk of psychological disorders. Also, THC, the active ingredient, and its effects linger in the body for up to a month. How it that appetizing?

Marijuana has physiological and psychological effects. However, television may have only psychological effects, which, even so, have mixed scientific results.

Well, for all the marijuana advocates, it’s your body and if you all choose to disregard the ill effects, go ahead. However, I find it absolutely disgusting that others have to share this habit just by being in the slightest proximity.

"90% of CCers want to attend) who smoke pot just to relax. "

Individuals whether cc’s or not who need drugs including alcohol to relax should find other means of relaxation.

One could argue that eating cake makes you indecent.

and in my opinion, pot is no less decent than eating animal products. they both wreck havoc on one’s body. and pot doesn’t even **** up the environment the same way that the meat industry does…

How does this compare to smoking tobacco?

I think something has to be a lot more than unhealthy, or even “unappetizing,” to be “devoid of decency.”
