Harvard SCEA Class of 2020 Applicant Thread

@schroscat I wouldn’t stress out too much about that score! It’s a little on the low side, but it can definitely be overlooked if you have an otherwise very compelling application!

Hey guys, I feel like I can trust you so I’ve got a question. For my other RD schools I’m taking the SAT dec5, which obviously doesnt receive recults until around the 22nd. Should I send it to my schools now, before taking the test or do you think I should send it after, once I’ve seen my scores. If sent after I would risk them not making it (the college board dropping the ball) or my not having internet access (family trip to brazil around that time :D). I’m just worried because if I see my scores and they are bad, I wont send them as I already have my ACT to fall back on. But if I send prior and they are bad, I can’t take them back and they would just weaken my applications. What do you advise?

@schroscat Don’t they superscore? Is that your superscore score?

US. Public regular school, but eastern WA state (aka out in the middle of nowhere). White male. Idk not any hooks that significant (again, white male middle class). @redrabbit23

@schroscat the middle 50% of Accepted Harvard students earned between a 2100 and 2350 so although 2130 may not be extremely high, I wouldn’t stress about it. You seem like a very passionate ( couldn’t think of a better word) and interesting individual just from conversing on this thread!

@RandomRhino I went through the acceptance thread from last year, and it seemed like there were students who were accepted with scores lower than mine because they had excellent EC’s. I hope that will be the case!

@Sajidur4 I had to superscore two SATs. Like I said, I’m not the best test taker, so this was a big feat for me.

@redrabbit23 Phew! Thank you so much! I’ve just been stressing over every little detail pertaining to my application, and it’s really boiled down to my test scores.

@schroscat
A 2130 places you just a bit below average for SAT’s. Remember, and please remember, that harvard rejects plenty of people with perfect SAT’s, 10 gazillion ap classes, and thirty 800’s on sat2’s (hyperbole… Just a wee bit… The point stands). Quite evidently, test scores are only one factor, and definitely not a DECIDING factor for top schools. If this was caltech it’d be a different story.

@expertiger That’s the thought process I went through when I decided to…not study for the SAT. I have a weird approach to education, being that I’d rather learn through reading books and research rather than having my nose in a test prep book, and my SAT score reflects that, haha. (Not to mention I got rather nervous before the test itself.) I just can’t wait to be able to expand my intellect in college by taking the classes I’m truly interested in!

@schroscat If you have a 2100+, you’re a competitive applicant. A Columbia (I think it’s similar to harvard) Alumni who is active in the admissions committee told me that after colleges see that you have 2100+, they look at other parts of your application.

@trainguy1 Thank you so much; honestly everyone’s input is making me less and less scared for my decision. I might actually come out of the 10th in one piece. Maybe. What was your statement?

@Sajidur4 Oh my goodness, that just made me so relieved! Thank you so, so, so much!

Merhaba arkadaslar!

I am a parent of a Turkish American son who has also applied SCEA. I am happy to see that if this collective group is admitted there will be several people who will actually be able to pronounce my son’s very very Turkish name. So far nobody gets it right.

@LKnomad Merhaba!!

Is there some crazy connection with Turkey and Harvard? That’s like the only other place I’ve read people are applying from haha. Any Russians out there? Chinese? Germans? Canadians (sorie)?

@LKnomad Merhaba! Söz veriyorum, oğlunun adını berbat etmem!

@expertiger Turkish families are BIG on education, and many families immigrate here to give their children a better chance at getting into a great college. The education system in Turkey is extremely harsh–one test determines (basically) your entire future–wheres the American system is much more forgiving. Also, Harvard is world-renowned, so Turkish families try to nudge their children to strive for the best! :slight_smile:

@schroscat well then that’s terrific! I was just honestly a bit confused haha.

@schroscat LOLLL
@LKnomad ben de söz veriyorum!

@experttiger hahaha, I don’t think so. Maybe just the CC Harvard demographic… but who knows

@schroscat One thing to remember, although your SAT scores will not make you stand out as an applicant, they shouldn’t significantly hold you back. You meet the threshold of being “smart enough.” You don’t have to be a genius, there are plenty of other ways to make yourself stand out in your application

@LKnomad oglunuzun adi nedir? meraktan soruyorum :slight_smile:
