I have a layover in Boston. Arrive at 12:45 and depart at 4:15. Considering I need to arrive back at the airport around 3:15, would this be enough time to take the subway and walk around campus a little? How long does the Silver Line to Red Line to Harvard trip take?
Also, I’ve read that Silver-Red-Harvard is the best option. Is this so? Or have you found something that works better. I would prefer not to take a bus if I don’t have to.
Traffic out there is nuts right now. On any other day I’d say you could make it for a quick walk around Harvard Yard. But everyone’s getting out early for the xmas holiday and it’s nuts. It took me 30 min to get home from our school in a suburb–it usually takes 10 min.
Will also depend on the speed of your connections. When we went out and took the silver line there were a lot of stops that took a lot of time. It can easily take an 45 minutes to get out from the airport to Harvard square, and even longer to get back. I would take the silver line / redline (alewife) to the square, and take an uber or lyft back to the airport. When we took the redline back, it easily took over an hour bc of the stops. Note that you cannot take lyft or uber from the airport.
@redpoodles This isn’t until January 13th, does that change anything?
@carlson2 If there wont be enough time for Harvard, can y’all suggest anything else to do that would be closer/easier/less time? I for sure want to leave the airport at least
Yes! But rethinking it, I wouldn’t chance it. It could take you a full 15 minutes just to FIND the silver line from your gate. T delays are very unpredictable. Logan-Cambridge is 30-40 min due to stops. If I were doing this (assuming good weather) I think I’d just get a cab, walk around Harvard Sq, and get back in the cab to go back. There is also a water taxi. I’ve never taken it so I’m not sure how easy it is to get to from the airport, or how long it realistically takes, but you can take it from Logan to the aquarium, quincy mkt (a walk), the greenway, etc. You really don’t have enough time to do any of these places justice, however.
It’s very easy, but timing can be an issue. The Route 66 shuttle goes to the Transportation Dock, but it also stops at all terminals plus the Blue Line subway station. Additionally, unless one wants to go to the waterfront, I don’t really see a reason to take it; it’s certainly not the best way to get to Harvard. Really for any places you want to visit I’d just take a taxi.
I’d take the shuttle to the subway. I think the first stop is the one closest to Faneiul Hall, and it’s a short walk from there to the North End. Plenty to see without traipsing out to Cambridge.
Thanks for the input guys! If I scrapped Harvard and just decided to take the blue line to somewhere closer at the North End, do y’all have any suggestions? I would probably have a solid 2 hours to walk around. Any classic Boston shops/cafes/site to see? I’ve been to Boston before so I’ve done all the touristy Paul Revere house, Boston Massacre site, etc. Looking more so for local hotspots. @carlson2@AboutTheSame@redpoodles
You’ll be lucky to be out of the airport by 1:00. Logan security lines are unpredictable, so returning to the airport at 3:00 would be cutting it very close. That leaves 2 hours tops. Given the short time I wouldn’t mess with the subway. If anything I’d take a cab downtown to walk around for an hour or so. And I’d bring a hat, gloves, and a very warm coat.
