Walking from Harvard Square to Kendall Square?

I'm wondering what the walking time is between Harvard Square and Kendall Square in Cambridge, MA. I am aware that both places are along the red "T" line, and I have walked in the environs of each, but never between them in one walk. And how is the safety of the walk? Would you make that walk at any time of the day or night? On the walk, what is the intermediate time to Central Square? I love Boston for its walker-friendliness, and have been all over Boston, but I'm less familiar with walking in Cambridge.

It depends how fast you walk, but I'd say between 20 and 30 minutes. You could either walk from Harvard Yard all the way down Broadway where it's more residential and prettier, or you could walk through Harvard Sq down Mass Ave to Main St.

If you're walking to MIT just walk straight down Mass Ave. The main part of MIT is still a good 10 minute walk from the "T".

Both ways should be as safe as walking in Boston.

Central Sq is halfway down Mass Ave.

Take the bus....

take the red line

ClassicRocker is right on. There's a part of central that is mildly sketchy, but I've made the walk with friends at night (walked home from Sox games a few times), and definitely didn't feel uncomfortable.

Thanks for the local advice. I'll be making a trip to Cambridge later this month, and like to walk whenever possible. We can deal with the weather, coming from Minnesota.

My favorite walk between the two of them is along the river, which takes a little longer than walking down Mass Ave but is very pretty.

I've never felt uncomfortable walking at night, but it's not out of the realm of possibility to.

Probably like 20-30 minutes... I like to walk when it is a nice day out. You could always take teh #1 bus to MIT or the M2 shuttle which is free for harvard students.

The walk is safe any time during the day. Likely well into the evening. While Central Square has done a lot of gentrifying and has become much safer over the years, I think the Main Street part of the walk might be a little deserted late at night. I'd guess that Broadway is a little better.

Maybe I'm a slow walker but I would have guessed 40 or 45 minutes.

It takes me about 20 minutes along Mass Ave to Central and another 20 to Kendall (not hurrying).

I would not do this alone at night, but I'm a girl and pretty cautious. I've done so many times when I was with a group of friends.

well it took me 40 minutes...but I wasn't in a hurry and was just strolling

I wouldn't recommend going alone at night. I went with a couple of friends around 6pm and we all took the bus back.
