harvard transfer

nspeds, please REFRAIN from personal attack to prove your point, and please, prove whatever you just said, with hard fact.

"2) It is most apparent that UCLA plays the admissions game, so even if there were a significant amount of higher-caliber applicants, they would probably not be considered on the basis of a higher probability of them being accepted at a higher-ranked institution."

I have too much work to do; but at any rate, for the sake of saving time and pointless debate, my argument still stands on point 1 alone.

I believe you mentioned on a previous thread, that replying doesn't take you much time at all. But given your track record....

Still, you failed to prove validity one of your point, an outrageous claim. I would love to see how you prove it, with hard facts.

So for your point 1, Can you please prove that all those 20000 applicants to UCLA are somehow inferior than the applicants to harvard and their number doesn't count?

again, hard facts are needed. Just because UCLA maynot be as prestiguous, it maynot mean UCLA lack of its share of elite applicants.

As a precaution, please refrain yourself from using data of accepted students. Their academic status DO NOT represent status of applicants.

alright, I am out for tonight. I know that you have a lot of works to do, so I will pause until you start pulling BS again.

USNews is a sufficient source the data you require.

Can you not heed your own advice?

By the way, I do not have time to look through all of your garbage for the pertinent data. If you do not believe me, I simply do not care.

anyone been contacted for interviews?

not yet pokerman. im figuring theyll start contacting next week, based on the timeframe from last year.

Again, I implore you all: please keep everyone posted on interviews!

vergil....what exactly do you want to persue?

i was just contacted for an interview by email about 45 minutes ago.

nervous but hopeful is a good way of describing my current state....will probably be this thursday evening. I'll keep you updated on how it goes.

-Annie

Could you please tell us what the interview letter said?

sure, here's the message:

I have been asked to contact you concerning setting up an interview as a
transfer applicant to Harvard.
My office in Middletown is on Saybrook Road and Thursday the 14th or 21st
after office hours at about 5:15pm would be best for me. Otherwise I am in
Guilford. I was wondering if you have any access to a car? Otherwise we
could meet at a coffee shop in town. The meeting usually takes about an
hour.
Please let me know as soon as you can as I must submit the interview by
April 24th and would like to find a mutually convenient time.

I look forward to hearing from you.

pretty simple...but my dad and i were theorizing about what motivates the interviews--does it mean you need extra help?? I'm just surprised, since one of my recommendations was from a prof who had received her PhD from Harvard, my dad went to the Business School, and one of my dad's friends from school wrote a letter for me... (so they would be able to speak as alums) but i think trying to figure out their logic would be a wee bit mind boggling.

-Annie

Oh jeesh. Crosses fingers...

Do all accepted harvard transfer students receive a request for an interview? In other words, if you don't receive an interview request, does that mean that you're probably not going to get in?

I've heard of people getting in without interviews, but I would assume that having one can only help.

no you are not

I heard about half the admitted students got interviews. Accounts from those who did get them said they thought the interview helped them. I would view it is a good sign.

I just got contacted by Harvard for an interview! I didn't think I'd be this nervous...O.o

annie, could you please post a brief rundown of ur stats (just the basics)? thanks!

sure, I'm not sure what you want me to include, but here's some things:

current school: Wesleyan
reason for transfer: I have Cerebral Palsy (a mild physical disability that impairs my gait) and Wesleyan is just awful accessability-wise and very resistant to change. After falling repeatedly in the fall, I ended up breaking my hip, and though i returned to school, it was definitely a challenge. However, this has been a really hard decision, since I love the academics and i'v emet some truly amazing profs.
year: Sophomor
major: English and Sociology double major, hoping to get into the social studies concentration
SATs: 1430
recs: 1 from my advisor/soc prof that I have an amazing relationship with--i'm helping him a design a course that I would TA in two years' time as a senior. The other is from an english prof who is truly amazing (she received her MA and PhD from Harvard and was head of the Afam studies dept at princeton)

college stats:
gpa: 3.81 (has stayed pretty much the same throughout)
courses taken so far: intro soc, intro to environmental studies, psychohistory of the modern world, Murder and Adultery: the french and russian nove, soc of religious movements, the american novel from 1865-1945, phil classics from descartes through kant (was asked to ta and be research assistant), intro to art history, postcolonialism and globalization, gender and history, reproduction in the 21st century, intro psych, hughes hurston morrison and wideman (with the prof that wrote my rec), work and leisure: the sociology of everyday life, body trouble: the psychological negotiation of the physical self, mystic voices: visionary experiences across the middle ages (yay for pre 1800 requirements in english) and an independant tutorial with my advisor.

ec's: diplomat (international affair magazine and discussion), wesPreP (group that's attempting to bring college classes into local prisons--but i just started with this), FedUp (eating disorder and body image), and FemNet (feminist group) I'm also workking to start a disabilities awareness group at the school, along with working with admissions and the administration around accessability.

also, i don't know if this will affect anything, but my dad went to the business school, and his roommate and very close friend worked at the admissions office for quite a long time and is now a prof. in the Business School and has written a rec (i think) for me.

summer work: intern at UCSF with the head of ped. radiology, intern in a law/acct firm, and hopefully the same mix again this summer

High School: The Urban School of San Francisco (private, sort of college approach to learning--we took 4 courses on a trimester basis and didn't have awards, honours, ap's, or even grades)
gpa: 3.75

ec's: gay-straight alliance, worked at Caral (cal. equivalent of NARAL), worked with the counsellor to create an eating disorders awareness group, intern on a movie set in the costume department, volunteer at family house (home for kids being treated for cancer at UCSF) and numerous art things

that was probably way more than you'lll ever want to know!

also, i got a letter in the mail today about the alumni interviews, and it said this (I don't know if this will help answer some questions)

"In passing your file along for the normal reading process, the Committee on Transfer Admissions has requested that you be included in a small number of alumni interviews that will be done for the 2005-2006 admissions cycle" and it went on, but it was more details...
