Harvard University Class of 2022 SCEA Applicants Thread

@OnHarvardTime This is amazing.

@MaybeHarvard2022 I’m simply stating the information told me in an email reply. The Upload Documents tab at the bottom of the portal…

@skieurope Is Coca-Cola Semifinalist worth an update to Harvard or is that not significant enough?

@jswani I’ve given my general guidelines, but as much as I like to assist, I’m not willing to open up the floodgates (nor do I have the energy) for different permutations. Use your best judgement.

my stats are:
ACT: 32C (35E, 34R, 31M, 28S) and 31C (35E, 33R, 26M, 30S) so superscored it’s a 33
GPA: 4.14W
black female, 1st generation US citizen
LOTS of leadership ECs
mostly honors or AP classes since freshman year
school doesn’t rank

what are my chances of getting in?

@dylanm47
IMO it’s impossible to make anything close to an accurate “prediction” given the information you’ve provided. What we do know is that your stats are near the low/mid range for Harvard, so in that sense you’re competitive - still, though, I’m sure plenty of applicants get rejected every year with those stats, but I bet there are also a ton who get in with similar stats. So what does it come down to? Well, IMO it’s ECs, essays and recs. Having lots of leadership ECs doesn’t really reveal much. With that said, I personally believe in quality and uniqueness over quantity, but I guess anything could work - you just didn’t provide enough information. Personally, I don’t think being black will help you much - I’m sure Harvard could fill it’s entire class with extremely well qualified black applicants. Being 1st gen, according to @skieurope isn’t much of a hook (I asked him this awhile back)

is the decision release date on tuesday december 12 or thursday december 14? or has it not been released yet?

@hssenior5472 dec 12 according to The Harvard Crimson.

@LOA1000 First gen is definitely a notbale hook, especially since top schools are increasingly trying to reach out to these type of applicants. Also, Harvard has increasingly accepted higher percentages of black students in the EA round, though that can be contributed to more blacks applying.

“That’s the first quality video i’ve seen from then in a while. Made me like H even more lol.”

@MaybeHarvard2022 which video are you talking about?

i was in a rush earlier, so here’s a more specific profile

ACT: 33 superscore, 32C (35E, 31M, 34R, 28S)
GPA: 3.74 UW 4.14W

honors and APs:

extracurriculars:

awards:
national honor society, math honor society, spanish honor society

work:
worked as a secretary for summer 2016

other:
black female, 1st gen citizen, applying for financial aid

@nekanorneki the “look what Yale made me do” video from OnHarvardTime.

@MaybeHarvard2022 Loved the video. Particularly, the ivies at the end :))

Lol

It is. But, IMO, less significant/helpful than other hooks.

I’m sure it was just unclear by how you posted, but one can be African-American and not first gen. Of course, if an applicant is first gen and black ** and** male, well, that the Holy Grail of hooks. However, it’s still not the Golden Ticket; any hooked applicant still have to have stats within range for Harvard.

For chances for multiple universities, the thread should go into “What Are My Chances,” which is what I did with the thread you started. And when the user says a “better audience,” at least IMO, it means you might actually get some adults to respond. Personally, I find the whole “Chance Me” thing for colleges with a less than 10% acceptance rate to be a waste of time, but asking for chances from applicants who have not completed the process is an exercise in futility. But some seem seem to like this party game. Good luck.

@skieurope , why would you consider first gen, black, and male the Holy Grail of hooks? Wouldn’t low income, being female, or being Hispanic/Latino serve as equally considerable ‘hooks’, considering these groups often face hardship in life as much as frist gen black males do?

I don’t mean to misrepresent or make any assumptions of any element of any of the aforementioned communities, just looking for more insight into your opinion and into the admissions process.

Mathematics - Fewer black males apply than either latinas or black females. @futurelegend

Make sure you know that Harvard University doesn’t care about the STEM fields. If you come here, prepare to take English and Humanities style classes in the STEM classes. They say they’re a “liberal arts school,” but really it’s tailored to people who are looking forward to studying the humanities. If you like the STEM field, I would suggest a different school.

I personally hold no credence in a user whose sole post is simply to rant. YMMV.
