Harvard vs. Brown 8-year Med Program

My friend is debating between Harvard and Brown's 8-year Medical Program, which is pretty competitive. what are the pros and cons for both? all help would be appreciated (and please dont have some kind of argument over this, thx)

bump please

Most people in this situation would pick the Brown PLME program. Pros: only need a 3.0 GPA to remain in the program, don't have to take MCAT (at least that's the case for NU's HPME program, not 100% sure for PLME), far less pressure in undergrad, freedom to pursue interests. Cons: slightly less prestigious undergrad degree. The decision is a no-brainer for most people.

thx, i would like to have more opinions if that were possible....

bump

harvard...hands down
- top undergrad
- if you are good enough to get in, you'll get into a higher med school than brown
- brown med isn't that great, plus everything is liberal there- defeats the purpose of a med program- that is directly from my brown interviewer
- 90% of harvard premed's get into med schools. chances are into a school higher than brown
- no im_blue- i disagree with both statements: 1) most people wont pick PLME and 2) its not a no-brainer

I would go to Harvard. Likely you will end up at a much better med school than Brown's. UNLESS you WANT to go to Brown, its a great undergrad school.

What does being liberal have to do with a med school, rickshaw?

"- if you are good enough to get in, you'll get into a higher med school than brown
- brown med isn't that great
- 90% of harvard premed's get into med schools. chances are into a school higher than brown"

Brown is ranked in the top third (#40 out of 125) of all med schools, so I don't believe that the average Harvard premed would get into a better med school. How about Harvard vs Northwestern's HPME; which one would you pick? NU is a top 20 med school.

haha i didn't literally mean liberal....what i meant was that the program itself integrates more liberal arts curriculum instead of focusing on the premed courses. I guess, at least in my opinion, if you are choosing a med program, then you should be pretty sure you are going to go into medicine; otherwise- if you are uncertain and want a more broad based program- just go with the regular undergrad programs.

Northwestern HPME vs Harvard- I would say is the hardest choice between the BA/MD programs and the undergraduate schools. I am picking Northwestern HPME over Stanford as of now...if that helps

dude BROWN HANDS DOWN

r u kidding me? unless u want the join the legacy of so many harvard alum's then go ahead, but r u kidding me? 8 yr med program at an Ivy league school? TAKE IT. who gives a crap about liberal atmosphere. Brown's med school is really good.

btw, dont listen to anyone when they say you could probaby get into a better med school than browns if ur at harvard. it doesnt matter what college you go to, if ur gpa sucks butt in college, you wont get into med school period. So unless you know when you go to harvard that you will get above a 3.7+, Ace the MCAT (30+)...brown all the way. Theyre offering you a free road to medicine the easy way WITH prestige...how can you get better than that?

auto acceptance to med school is a no-brainer. If your friend gets great grades, s/he can take the MCAT and apply to other med schools anyway. In the medical world, no one asks where you went to undergrad....the prestige key is medical school. But, what are the chances of getting into Harvard med from H undergrad, vs. Brown undergrad...that is the question which is impossible to answer. Note, as the earlier poster said, it only takes a 3.0 to stay in the program, and go to med school.....but a 3.0 outside of the program would qualify you for Pharmacy school.

If your friend is 100%-without a doubt-I am willing to bet my life- positive that he wants to be a doctor, then go with Brown. Med school admission is super stressful and super tough. It's much harder than "oh he goes to Harvard he'll get into any med school he wants". Brown is a great UG institution and its med school isn't too shabby either. He can always take the MCAT and apply out to other med schools if he wanted to.

I chose Northwestern HPME over Brown PLME, Princeton, and Columbia

brown. you'll save valuable time and dollars and prevent a lot of stress with the 8-year program. brown med degree is respected too. by the time you graduate and start working, it wont really matter that the degree is from brown and not some other better medical school.

The only thing that the "better medical school" degree is gonna do is maybe get you a better residency. Other than that, med schools are all pretty damn good.

Harvard, 8 year program is not really accelerated. u get to spend your undergrad years at harvard, exploring some other career options. I don't think the difference between Brown and Harvard degree is really all that big of a difference. But, it is very difficult to turn down Harvard.
