Harvard waitlist FAQ

Only send a letter of recommendation if you have a personal relationship with the person. I have a positive relationship with my superintendent having been on a committee together this year, so it was an appropriate letter to send. If you are just looking to impress the committee by getting the principal to churn out a letter and you just know the principal in passing, I wouldn’t bother.

I would also make sure that the additional letter of recommendation provides new information about you which wasn’t offered in previous recommendation letters. If it just rehases the same information, the additional reco letter wouldn’t be helpful.

Would it be too weird to send an extra essay? (Looking back now, I think that the supplemental essay I wrote for another college–the one that accepted me–was much better than the optional essay I wrote for Harvard.)

Harvard admissions contacted my daughter’s counselor today to see if she was still interested and for an updated transcript. Although she is fine with the school she committed to last week, she would go to Harvard if admitted. Is this SOP for all waitlist kids or is the school seriously considering my daughter? We are just trying to minimize the emotional roller coaster.

Did your daughter send in any update letters stating her intention to matriculate if accepted or whatnot?

"Did your daughter send in any update letters stating her intention to matriculate if accepted or whatnot? "

Yes, several weeks ago she sent in a letter reiterating her interest, and included info from the second part of senior year. However, the more I think about it, today’s query was probably just normal housekeeping and does not indicate any movement on the list.

IMO, it seems like a good sign though. Keep your head up! My GC never notified me that Harvard called her…

My S was on the wait list last year, sent 2 additional letters, one from a famous alum who knows him personally, another from a college professor well-known in her field with whom he did political work .

He contacted H and requested to remain on the list, said it was his top choice.

They contacted him about every 3 week until July first, said they still wanted to keep him on the list if he was still interested, and asking for any new info.
He got a polite letter on July 1st stating the class had been filled.
There was some comment that everyone hadn’t been asked to remain on the list with each communication, so while I would be somewhat optimistic, chances still are low, and communication is not a “really good sign” of anything.
Best to let it go and be happily surprised if an acceptance comes.
My S is now very happy at Midd, where he was also wait-listed.

CalPeg,

My opinion is that it’s an excellent sign. Where did your D commit to?

Hello Harvard waitlisted folks! I am also on the waitlist and along with a lot of other people on this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/harvard-university/898910-harvard-waitlist-waiting-room-2014-thread-32.html</a> have compiled a list of around 80 Harvard waitlistees on CC. If your name is in bold, that means we think you are on the waitlist… but are unsure. Please confirm or deny your spot so we can maintain the list!

If your name is in bold PLEASE come out and say hi so we can confirm that you remained on the waitlist! Thanks!

If your name is not on the list and you are on Harvard’s waitlist, please say hello!

Updated with wonderful lurkers. More people should come out and join us! (77 people so far; 49 for sure and 28 unknown)

Does anyone have thoughts on sending an additional essay? Is that too awkward?

MRSCOLLEGE: My D committed to UC Berkeley, which was her west coast #1. Since we live in California I am thrilled, but she is still on waitlist at Harvard and Brown, and would probably take either over Cal just because she would love to go east for four years. (Her father’s from Boston and thinks she’s crazy.) We’ll see. I keep telling her Cal is great for 4 years, then she can go to Harvard or Brown for grad school. But there’s no arguing with a high school senior. They want what they want. Either way it’s a good thing.

Hi there

I just responded to another query, but yes, my daughter is still on the waitlist. Good luck to you all! IF my D should get in to H, she will be in fantastic company with you. Thanks for all your insight.

CalPeg, your D sounds like my D who also got into Berkeley (and on a couple of Ivy waitlists). Mine also wants to spend the next four years on the east coast, so she chose Swarthmore.

hey guys!

i am on the harvard waitlist and i was wondering what everyone’s opinions are on how they go down the list - i know of kids in my school that are being accepted off of other waitlists (i.e. yale) already; if we haven’t heard anything is it likely we are further down on the list, or has harvard not even begun to accept WL kids yet?

thanks!
