How many people are on the waitlist?

I hear that Harvard waitlists about 1000 to 1200 people. However, I haven't seen any real source of information. Can anybody here confirm (and cite your source) about how many people are waitlisted? It seems that Harvard waitlisted way more than 1000 people; there are already about five waitlistees at my school alone. I know this doesn't actually matter and if you get off the waitlist, you get off the waitlist, but I am just curious. Thanks.

2500+ (10 char)

Source? (10 char)

I am in close contact with the admissions office.

no way man…2500? im guess 1000 were offered

While I don’t have contact with the admissions office, 2500 seems far too high. First, I don’t think they want to have to sort through 2500 more applications in May. They easily could have whittled that number down beforehand. Second, the articles I have read point to 1000-1200 waitlisted last year, so there is no reason for such a massive increase. And third, the wait list letter said that the wait list “represent[s] a small percentage of all our candidates”. I can’t imagine that 2500, more than the amount accepted, represents a small portion.

Five waitlistees at your school alone? Which HS do you attend?

I’ll check with some of my sources again, but everyone has been pointing towards ~2500, after all, many will elect to not stay on the waitlist.

hmmm 4 posts?

singsong

I don’t believe yoouuuu

I think 2,500 is much closer to the true value than 1,000 based off of all the WL #'s i’ve seen.

no 2,500 seem huge!!they mention on the letter that a small percentage is wl…2,500=8.5%!!not at all a small percentage!

8.5% is a small percentage. I think it might be a little smaller though because I think they accept more than they waitlist. Its probably closer to 2000 even.

Yale has 769 waitlistees and 26k applicants.
Brown has 700-800 waitlistees and 25k applicants.
Harvard has 29k applicants: you do the math.

Note: Waitlist info is from 2008. But should be indicative of 2009.

Yale waitlisted 1052, up 22% from prior year, compared to 2014 accepted. Note: Number accepted is a better measure than number applied.

Princeton waitlisted1,526, up 93 %, compared to 1,733 accepted.

However,

So, 800-1000 seems a better number for Harvard.

thanks operadad.does anybody now the size of the 2013 class??1650-1670 or have they told exactly?

1655

10char

^^

Exactly, the number of freshmen beds in Harvard yard.

I don’t think it’s possible to infer precisely the number of waitlistees without knowing Harvard’s current policies. Obviously, Yale and Princeton are doing very differen things right now with their waitlists – Yale’s is about 40% of its admitted class, Princeton’s is closer to 80%. In the past – four years ago, when my older child applied, Yale was waitlisting many more students than it currently does, about 100% of the number of students to whom it had offered admission. So practices here can vary a lot, from institution to institution, and from year to year.

I don’t know if there’s any argument that Harvard needs a 2,000-person waitlist. But it could very well want one.

the waitlist is a valuable bone to throw the alums whose kids were not quite admissable. in a year where raising additional money for the university is paramount, keeping the alums happy (relatively) is very important. a big waitlist has very little downside for the university. i would guess 2000 is closer to the actual number than 1000.

guys can we move all discussions in the thread i have made official thread?in this way our discussion wont be scattered and it will be easier for everyone!!!
