Harvard Waitlist Waiting Room 2015

My local Harvard club has distributed lists of accepted and waitlisted students from our area. For whatever it’s worth, the waitlist group is smaller than the accepted group.

So I have no clue how waiting lists work.
Do we have any obligation to go to Harvard if accepted off the waiting list? (i.e. Is this binding?)

New arrivals occasionally ask how this works. It’s pretty simple:

<ol>
<li>You’ll get a letter from Harvard offering you a slot on the waitlist. (I got them from H Y & P last year – I personally thought H’s was the classiest, and P’s was the most unfriendly.) The letter will explain the basics.</li>
<li>If you accept, you hold a spot, but you’re under no obligation to attend if invited.</li>
<li>Meanwhile, you sign on (matriculate) by decision day with your best alternative to Harvard and pay a registration fee if the school requires it (not everyone does). But you can withdraw if you get in at Harvard or somewhere else – which is what happened to me. The only cost to you is forfeiting your fee.</li>
<li>Then you wait – and not much is likely to happen until mid to late May, when Harvard has historically begun to accept or reject folks on the waitlist. They don’t usually wrap up the last few people until the end of June.</li>
<li>But, look for ways to stay in touch with your regional rep. Make sure s/he knows you’re still very interested in Harvard, and send in any good news that comes along. You don’t want to be a nuisance, but it’s even worse to be forgotten. </li>
<li>Meanwhile, you can commiserate, speculate, emote and share rumors with other people on this thread.</li>

So is everyone for sure going to accept a place if they get off the Harvard waitlist? I’m starting to think that Stanford might be a better fit for me…I don’t know if I really want to go through the agony of waiting for a shot at Harvard that might never materialize…And there’s always going to be Harvard grad school, right? 4 year at Stanford and then hopefully 4 years at Harvard = perfect.

First of all, I just want to say that I have come back to CC so that I could help out people the way that they helped me out last year with questions that I had about the various colleges my daughter had applied to. I hope that my scattered comments have been helpful.

RedLine, I remember you from last year. Your bookkeeping was amazing. Did you end up at U Chicago (am I thinking of the right person)? My daughter is at Northwestern and loves it.

misterbeck, if you like Stanford, don’t torture yourself with the waiting list and let yourself fall in love. There are DEFINITELY people who got into Harvard and didn’t get into Stanford. It’s a great school. Or keep yourself on the waitlist, but let yourself bask in the acceptance of other schools.

Last year, we were in the odd position of having a junior at Harvard (go Crimson) and a daughter on the waitlist, who was ultimately denied a spot (we hate you Crimson). We are not a legacy family and don’t have any ties to the university other than our son. Anyway, we told our daughter not to get her hopes up, but to look closely at the schools that she had been accepted to. We had not visited Northwestern before she was accepted, so we got on a plane to Chicago, and had an amazing 3-day trip. My daughter fell in love with the school, we plopped down the deposit (such a tiny amount of money compared to what was yet to come), and that was that. When she got the letter in mid-May saying that she hadn’t gotten into Harvard, she shrugged her shoulders. She had already bought a purple sweatshirt, and she didn’t look back. Frankly, I think it is a better match for her. This isn’t sour grapes; we would have loved her to go to Harvard if only for the financial aid and its proximity to home.

So my message to waitlisters is this: let yourself fall in love with wherever you have already gotten into (and I bet those are some great schools) because that’s where you may end up. After a certain point, this system is a crapshoot. When my son went to a Yale info session, the admissions person said, “We could throw out our entire accepted class, take the next 2000 people, and the class would be just as good.” Harvard is great; it’s not the only school. It takes students that some other schools reject (my son didn’t get into Yale).
