Harvard Waitlist Waiting Room 2015

I was an active participant in last year's waitlist thread (<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/harvard-university/898910-harvard-waitlist-waiting-room-2014-thread.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/harvard-university/898910-harvard-waitlist-waiting-room-2014-thread.html</a>). I'm still not sure if that made me crazier or helped me stay sane, but it did give me a supportive community of fellow sufferers. We were all able to share our hopes, fears, and frustrations. I expect there will be waitlistees this year who feel the same need.

Last year, more than 160 people eventually signed on as waitlistees. A total of 16 reported being accepted, including 4 "z-listers" who were given deferred admission to class of 2015. I was one of the four, and got word at the end of June, long after I had given up hope. (That did mean I was one of the few people who could go on line today knowing that the news from Harvard admissions would be good. I'm looking forward to being a proud member of Harvard 2015.)

In terms of what to expect, here's the sequence from the last two years:

Last Year -- class of 2014:
First wave reported on May 21st between 4 and 9 PM. Acceptances AND rejections were sent out.

Second wave reported on Friday June 4th. Only acceptances were released. Rejections were sent out on Tuesday June 8th.

Third Wave: Acceptances and rejections were released around June 30/July 1 to most, possibly all, remaining members of the waitlist.

Class of 2013:
16 reported being accepted by 05-26-2009, post #1053. Everyone who was accepted from the thread heard on the 19th, 20th, and 21st which was a Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This was probably the first wave.

Next wave seemed to happen on the 12th of June with about 6-10 more students from the thread accepted from the 14th to the 29th of June.

In both years, the Z-list acceptances were scattered and seemingly random, though many may have been based on hooks.

So, if you're on the waitlist and want to commune with others, sign up on the list that starts below. And good luck!

I’m a graduate of UCLA but was a former frequent poster on college confidential (haha way back in the day, can’t believe my cheesy username still exists!) Anyhow, I was never exactly a shooter for ivy leagues, but my sister had quite the high school career and just found out she was waitlisted at Harvard! I think she should continue her pursuit!

Redline, you wrote that “Last year, more than 160 people eventually signed on as waitlistees. A total of 16 reported being accepted…” –> do you mean 160 people were on the waitlist in general or 160 people signed on to the College Confidential waitlistee thread?

Thanks!

Honestly don’t feel like getting my hopes up after 7 straight rejections today. Seems like my best wasn’t enough… I did send a highly sardonic email to Yale haha. Hope it doesn’t get me killed

The 2d-- a little more than 160 people signed on to last year’s CC waitlist thread. My guess is that was roughly 10% of the total , but I’ve never seen an announcement from Harvard about the size of the waitlist.

This year, Yale has announced they accepted 2006 (7.35% of pool) and put 996 on the waitlist. Princeton waitlisted 1248 applicants, after accepting 2282 (8.4% of the pool). Harvard takes a larger class than Yale or Princeton, and I’d guess they also have a larger waitlist.

HY&P all accepted the lowest percentages in history – it was a very, very tough year for high-talent applicants.

redguard117: Really wish I could read this sardonic email you speak of! :)

Anyway, I’m probably headed off to Stanford…but what’s the harm anyway?

honestly thought it would be a rejection… the email didn’t come through until after midnight. I fell asleep on the couch and woke up, checked one last time and freaked out. I can’t believe I even made it this far!

misterbeck:

well, here it is haha. I have a feeling that Yale will do a google search and see if they can discover who wrote it (if they can’t already from my email), but I got rejected anyway so who cares.

"Dear Yale:

I have completed my evaluation of the colleges to which I have applied, and I am genuinely sorry that I am not able to offer you my place in the class of 2015.

I realize that this decision may come as a real disappointment. I also hope you will understand that the decision reflects only the extraordinary range of colleges represented in my “acceptances” list, and is not a judgment about Yale’s US World News & Report ranking or resources. Of the more than twenty-seven thousand schools vying to be my first choice this year, most are fully capable of being the “perfect fit,” or of making unique contributions to my cognitive and emotional development. It is painful to me that I must turn away so many superb, well-endowed and highly ranked colleges.

While regretting that I was not able to respond positively to your interest in me, I want to wish Yale every success in its future pursuits. Experience suggests that regardless of my decision, most of the colleges interested in me will be attended by other, although less outstanding, students. I extend my best wishes for the coming year.

Sincerely,
S A "

Keep in mind I didn’t get accepted haha. And yes, I did actually send it

And redguard117 - I remember writing an angry note along those lines after being deferred by Yale. Posted it on FB and a prudent friend convinced me to take it down =P

fuzzie: too late for that bud, haha. Hopefully they see the humor in it. If not, they’ll probably get some high placed alum to whack me off
