Congrats to everyone who got in, I’m so excited for all of you! I’m a current first year student and I love it there. If any of you have questions please don’t hesitate to ask!
Hey @USAStudent06 ! I was wondering if you could tell me more about the dorms, and their personalities. I think I like West so far, but would love to learn more about the others!
If I remember right, I don’t really think you get to choose anyway. You fill our a profile of information, and then they decide where to place you.
Hi @burgerlover ! I’m a first-year student already missing Mudd over this break, so I’m happy to talk about it! On the roommate/dorm matching form, there is a question about which dorms you would like to live in, so there is definitely no guarantee but they try to meet that preference @intparent .
I live in West right now and I couldn’t be happier to be there, especially for my pass/fail semester. It’s full of happy, caring, extroverted personalities and I’ve found it to be an amazing, tight-knit sub community within the tight-knit HMC community. I love the fact that I can step outside my door and there will always be people willing to hang out, do homework together, or have some crazy fun. Just invest in some decent earplugs. For the five dorms most similar to West, I’ll provide stereotypes that you might be able to relate to from high school.
West: Wild, energetic kid with a close group of friends but also has a ton of acquaintances. Loves to participate in all the activities.
North: Jock or popular kid (without the douchiness of course because it’s Mudd )
Case: Someone who’s often extroverted but definitely needs their quiet time too (try to get into “Topless”, a section of Case, if you’re on the extroverted and adventurous side-- they do lots of outdoorsy trips)
Linde: Hard (interpret from that what you will); not afraid to speak your mind
Atwood: Doesn’t fit any of the above but still likes to party
Note that Atwood and Linde have suite-style living, which can make or break it for some people.
You can definitely put multiple dorms as your preference on the housing form, but don’t stress too much about it- the current students who place the incoming freshmen do a really good job. Also, all the dorms are really welcoming no matter your personality, there are quite a variety of people in most dorms, and plenty of people go to other dorms to hang out if they have better friends at other ones. Enjoy your last moments of high school and I’ll see you next year!
Hey, sorry I just saw the request for me to describe the dorms. I’m also a first year at Mudd, and I think the above description is pretty accurate. In just my few months here, it’s already begun to feel like home and I’ve met so many amazing people. Regardless of your personality, you will fit in well.
I live in Linde, and I have found that although there is a certain stereotype for each dorm, the culture is more dictated by the subunit of the dorm, whether it be the suite or floor you live in or on. The dorm works well for me, although it may not work for others. I’ll add onto what the above student has written and include some other dorms for students who may not feel like those dorms describe them. South is for the quieter people, but they’re incredibly nice and open to others. East is known to have people who love video games and they have kind of quirky interests. Overall, don’t worry about which dorm you’re put into because the rooming survey is very very detailed, and if for some reason you don’t like it, the process to switch is very easy.
In addition, the people you spend time with aren’t necessarily dependent on which dorm you live in. I spend a lot of time in the lounges of other dorms with a variety of different types of people. And of course, through other activities, you’ll also meet students from the other 5 C’s and fit into communities outside of just Harvey Mudd.
Honestly, I love it here and I love the consortium. I’m super excited for all of you and again, please feel free to message me if you have any more questions!
I agree about who you hang out with not necessarily being dictated by the dorm. My kid made friends in another dorm right away freshman year (she lived in Case, and at least the section she lived in didn’t have suite style living). She hung out a ton in the common room and suites in her friends’ dorm, and was able to move in there later at her time at Mudd.
Another thing about making friends is that most everyone is taking mostly the same classes the first 3 semesters while completing core requirements. So you have lot in common academically with all the other frosh. That is a bonding experience in itself. And lends itself to meeting a lot of people from different dorms, too.
Hello,
My affiliation is with Case (I’m class of 2016) and to give some more perspective, whereas the inner dorms have older and more established dorm cultures, the outer dorms are up-to-date and have more spacious dorm rooms.
Mudd for me was great for developing professional connections and giving me confidence. I hope you all enjoy your college experience, wherever it may be!
