Hi everyone,

I'm a high school senior right now, and the May 1st deadline is coming fast!

I was accepted to Harvey Mudd College, but they only gave me about $3,000 of their $60,000 cost of attendance. My dad said that if I go there, we would probably be around $100k in debt by the time I graduate. I don't know how long that would take me to pay off or anything (just that it's a reeaally big number). However, we would be able to more easily afford a UC.

I want to major in computer science and would ideally work for the government (like the FBI or CIA or something) or with the medical field (exactly how I would do that, I'm not sure yet) in the future.

I know Harvey Mudd is supposed to be an amazing school, but do you think it is worth the extra $100k? Looking only at cost, quality of education, and opportunities each would give me in the future, what would you recommend?

For engineering I’d pick Harvy Mudd. Harvey Mudd is amazing but not worth 100k in debt IMO…for your intended career path (awesome choice btw), I’d save the money and go to SD/LA.

I think Harvey Mudd is an amazing school, but not amazing enough to be $100K in debt. If you’re smart enough and determined enough to get into Mudd, you can do well wherever you go.

Harvey Mudd is honestly a better school, and if cost weren’t an issue I’d say go there without question. However, it’s not $100k better. If you were successful at UCSD or UCLA and plan to go to graduate school, get a PhD, or go to med school, you could go to a more prestigious school for your second degree. In terms of opportunity, there’s plenty at the UCs, and a secondary degree from caltech or MIT or a comparable caliber school would give you the bragging rights (and be the degree you refer to whenever anyone asks you where you went).

I’ll parrot what the others have said. Mudd’s a fantastic school for computer science, but UCLA and USCD aren’t exactly slouches. It’s not worth an extra $100K to go to Mudd.
