It’s too bad you don’t have better grades. St. Cloud is not an enlightened place. You’d be better off at North Dakota State U. frankly. I spoke with some black professors who told me it was hard getting up and going to work at SCSU. One black prof had the N word written on it, right in the college parking lot. I feel for you.

By the way, I know of a URM with a 2.7 GPA from a Minnesota high school who was rejected by the U of M (main campus) but accepted by UW-Madison. Go figure. You just never know.

I’m sure that SCSU is much more accepting than the general population of St. Cloud, but it’s definitely something to consider. For example, this winter there was a car crash where the driver and passenger were both critically injured. On the St. Cloud Times website article, lots of people posted comments with get well/pray for them/positive stuff. Then the article was updated with the info that the two injured people were Somalian. The comments switched over to Somalis can’t drive/go back to Africa/negative stuff. It really really sucks, but it’ll take awhile before our cultures mesh in St. Cloud. This isn’t to say that you can’t get a great education at SCSU, just think about how it would affect you (if it affects you).

No way! That’s ridiculous…considering that Madison is a lot more selective than the U.

But you never know unless you try, right? I’m scared and know the chances of rejection are high for me but i’m going to still apply to the U of M & Howard (#1 choice)

and I’m shocked about how someone treated that black professor…all i can say is sad…

sighs if only i could turn back the clocks.

I’ll try to score a 2000-2100 on my SAT…just because i’m not very good with the SAT, lol.

@ funk-- that’s really sad to hear actually! I still can’t get over how the fact that people still have negative feelings like that!

^ Lol…okay now i’m kind of scared to go there…

But in all honestly…if you saw me walking down the street you’d probably never guess i’m somali (but probably ethiopian or eritrean or northern sudanese , egyptian or even mixed…but that’s close enough :/)

Thanks everyone (and @ twomules) for warning me about the racism that’s present at SCSU…now i really have second thoughts about that school…

You know, there is Southwest State in Marshall, MN, if you want to be in Minnesota at an inexpensive state school and living in a dorm but you specifically want to avoid St. Cloud State. (It is embarrassing and very sad that St. Cloud State has had so many incidents of overt racism. The administration is working on diversity training and programs, but one could think that the SCSU administration is doing too little, too late.) St. Cloud is stronger academically and I myself would prefer to live in the more urban St. Cloud over the less urban Marshall, but you know, going to Southwest State in Marshall is an option.

I think UW La Crosse and UW Eau Claire would be stronger academically than Southwest State (or St. Cloud State, for that matter) and might be close to the same price for a Minnesota resident because of the MN/Wisconsin reciprocity. You might consider applying to them. I think that they are easier to get into than UW Madison.

I am not going to look it up but I have a hunch there are more American Indians at Bemidji than there are African Americans there. It is a unique campus. I loved it when (in another thread) a poster from Anchorage who said people from his/her area considered it to be a good out-of-state option. It is a cool school. It is “pretty chill when it comes to race.” It is a small, very pretty campus on a beautiful lake. Gorgeous. If you don’t mind cold weather, it is terrific. (There are tunnels between buildings.) The kids who go there are nice. It’s often chosen by students from my own Northern MN high school.

I would hesitate to recommend it to a city person like the OP, east afro beauty, because it is so remote (and did I mention it is cold there?) but you never know - it might be good - there wouldn’t be many distractions there for her, especially since she is not a partier. I wonder if she likes hockey games? :)

(Unrleated to this thread but to entertain those of you interested in Minnesota: My daughter will be a counselor at Concordia Language Villages this summer. We love Bemidji.)

“I am not going to look it up but I have a hunch there are more American Indians at Bemidji than there are African Americans there.”

I visited that school with a Native American friend, and there definitely seemed to be more Native Americans than African Americans there. It’s very close to a Native American reservation, and it has a strong Native American studies department.

Lovely, friendly, campus that seems focused on teaching. If you wouldn’t mind being in the racial minority and being in a rural place with very cold winters, it seemed like a very nice place to go to school.

@ MidWestMom2Kids: Thank You Thank You Thank You & Thank You SOOO much!! :] for the amazing information you posted & just gave me.

hahahaha I suppose since I’ve always lived in urban areas for most of my life ( north va(d.c. area)---->Dubai---->Minneapolis) it’s just something I kind of prefer & i’m used to But im very good at adapting to new environments though.

I will definitely let you know if I end up picking one (and maybe later i’ll let you know which one seems the nicest to me (: )…

@ pizzagirl: I’ve heard of concordia moorhead–ive heard that its campus is very beautiful…

@ northstarmom: I suppose I wouldn’t mind being a minority for a while…but i suppose it might be kind of cool considering that I’ve never met a full native american (sorry if that sounded weird haha)…and trust me i think i’m used to the harsh winters by now! Lol…

I have a feeling i won’t be really be “partying” if i happen to be a transfer at any of those schools lol…but it’s gonna be more likely to happen if i go to howard…i think…(but only a party or 2 occasionally)…

eastaafrobeauty, if you’re going to go outstate to a public campus in Minnesota, go south rather than north. MidWestMom2kids made some good recommendations.

By the way, I believe Mankato State is now called Minnesota State University — Mankato.

Yup, it’s true. And both parents were U of M alums, so she was a double legacy. U of M still turned her down. The shock was getting accepted by UW-Madison. The bigger shock came when she decided not to go to UW-Madison, despite a miracle acceptance.

^ hahaha wow! I’m still suprised about that Madison acceptance! It could be possibly because Madison doesn’t get many or enough minority applicants I’m thinking…but wow. ( or maybe everything else in her app was better than the gpa…lol).

Mankato sounds good so far!(seems to be the nicest & it’s so affordable!!!). Not sure if I’ll be able to get in but I’ll try!

and I’ll apply to the U of M & Howard U just to see what happens…you never know…but i’m not going to have my hopes to high though, haha.
I’ll keep in mind that rule of thumb: better to go south, instead of north. :]

Normandale and north hennepin are pretty good. I would recomend going to cc for a couple of years to boost your gpa, then you might be able to get into a better school then scsu

@ DMagnific: From what I’ve heard, Normandale CC is a great CC & has really good teachers.

@ DMaginific & MidwestMom2kids : MidwestMom2kids is right though…i’ll need a dorm…if that wasn’t the issue i’d go straight to the CC lol…plus I cannot sand living at home anymore…it’s getting to the point where it’s a bit too much for me to handle :(

I’ll still apply to the U of M & Howard (visit changed to June after school & SATs get over with) just to see what happens and a bunch of in state schools…

I went to SCSU for a semester and there is quite a bit of discrimination. Although they require a few diversity classes, from what i heard a lot of people didn’t really pay attention or think it was important. I heard a lot of people make racist comments about Muslims in particular, which inspired me to write a paper on it. It’s not a bad school and has many good classes and great people, but there’s also a good amount of intolerance. For me at least it was hard to make friends without going to parties which I’m not a fan of, so I’ll most likely be going elsewhere next year. Hope this helps, good luck.

^ @tonysm007: wow! that was an old thread you bumped over there…i luckily noticed??!

I have a feeling there’s a strong possibility I might end up at SCDU…oh well. My counselor told me that racism isnt an issue there…and I know a lot of other fellow africans & some muslims that go there and say everything’s fine…
