Has anyone actually been satisfied with their fin aid package?

if you go to cornell.edu , click on admissions and then financial aid
you will be able to get most of your questions answered.

under costs - it lists what Cornell considers the cost of attending - a double room, a specific meal plan. etc.

then under eligibility, it shows how the University calculates your financial aid…

https://www.finaid.cornell.edu/eligibility/

it shows what amount is expected each year from the student - it increases each year. This amount can be either from summer work or on campus jobs - or both - if you have savings the University expects you to use a 1/4 of that each year plus earn the portion for the student contribution

Thanks for all your responses. I’m not an international student. I used a calculator on their website and got an estimated financial aid package of a $48,700 grant and it said the cost of attendance would be around $53,000 including room & board, transportation, etc. Hopefully that’s close to what I actually end up getting

I just received my package today and I’m very happy with what I received.
@yellowsnowman, unless it’s different for each college/student, the total cost of attendance is actually $57,212. I received $54,772 as my total award and I’m expected to only pay a student contribution of $2,440. I think I got a full ride? Not sure if student contribution is calculated into full ride grants or not. Since your family was in a similar situation as mine, you should receive a similar award.

Congrats Yunsang! This is really good, I think it’s even cheaper than attending a community college. lol

@Yunsang: Congratulations! That’s awesome. I’d be ridiculously happy if I got a financial aid package that good :D

@Yunsang - be sure to read your award carefully. Notice it most likely has federal work study. This year the amount is $1,000 per semester. Not sure what it will be next semester. Probably the same or slightly more.

This amount is not money they actually give you. This is money that they expect you to earn at a job during the semester. You don’t have to, but I just wanted to make sure you realize it isn’t money they simply give you. It just means when you apply for an on campus job, you can tell them you are eligible for federal work study, which means there will be more jobs available to you.

Here is a link to a little information about it.

https://www.finaid.cornell.edu/types/work/federalworkstudy.cfm

yeah i basically got a full ride

usafa2011dad, this is a very good information. Thank you.

Has anyone from the US received their FA packages from Cornell? I still haven’t.

I still haven’t either…!!

Fantastic package; could basically not go anywhere any cheaper.

I didn’t get mine yet. :(

I’m officially confused. Isn’t the student contribution by definition the amount that they expect me to earn during the semester and pay off? O_O. I’ll provide the official numbers that I got in the mail yesterday if it clarifies things.
Estimated Cost of Attendance … $57,212
Student Contribution … $2,440
Parents’ contribution … $ 0
Minus Total Family Contribution … $2,440
Estimated Financial Need … $54,772

Financial Aid Awarded Fall Spring Total
Cornell Grant 22,711 22,711 45,422
Federal Pell Grant Estimate 2,300 2,300 4,600
Federal Supplemental Grant 1,375 1,375 2,750
Federal Work Study-UG 1,000 1,000 2,000

Total Award … $54,772

So doesn’t this mean that the Federal Work Study was part of my award? I mean if it wasn’t, I would have only received $52,772 as my award, right?

I believe you have to work for those $2000 (Federal Work Study) but I’ve also heard you can pay it off instead of working.

work study is during the school year - student contribution is on top of that - summer and winter break earnings.

so student contributions have to be paided from your salary? what if you earn some extra cash thru scholarships, can u use that money to pay it off?

NY here… and no financial aid package yet. I called the financial aid office and they said my paperwork went out on the 10th. Why is it taking so long?

I am very happy with mine to say the least

It would be great if you guys “report” here when you receive your fin aid packages.

edit: by that I don’t mean how much money you got, saying that you’ve received your package would be enough.

still didnt receive mine! when should i expect to?

another day gone by…and no financial aid package.:(
