I've been looking around for a laptop that can last at least 3 yrs and that has great reviews from actual users.
And I began looking at ND's comp. shop since I could just go there for help when the computer goes wrong or something, but when I checked the website, it seems like they don't sell HP computers!! (I promised myself not to buy Dell ever again). So is it still worth it to buy from ND store when I have to rather purchase computer brands that I don't really approve? And for the ppl who've bought computers at that store, how would u rate the store's customer service?

Thanks

I don't think the OIT store sells Dell computers. They sell Macs and, on the PC side, laptops from Lenovo (formerly known as IBM). I myself am a Mac user, but my parents use Lenovo laptops. They may not be the most stylish computers, but from what I've seen, they work quite well and are quite reliable.

If you really like HP, go ahead and buy a computer from them. OIT will still fix your computer if something happens to it (for a price). OIT Service Prices: Service & Repair Labor Rates - Office of Information Technologies - University of Notre Dame
And, more likely than not, you'll get to know a tech-savvy student who would only be too glad to poke around in your computer.

can i still get service from ND computer store if I buy a laptop online?
would they still help me even if I buy a laptop from different places? (Memorial Day sales is approaching)

OK, here's the mindset you should have when you're going into ND: You pay close to $50,000 a year for these kinds of services, and you pay them up front. That means that, not only are they all at your disposal, you've already paid them to help you, so it's their job to do so.

This goes for everything - OIT, tutoring, Health Services, your print quota, the Career Center, the Writing Center, etc etc.

In other news: Get a Mac. Mine has been going better than strong for about 2 1/2 years now with almost no incident whatsoever (I installed more RAM, but that was just because of a poor decision when I got it to get the baseline level when I should have known I needed a little more. And my own personal persnickity nature when it comes to my computer).

You get great deals through Apple and OIT, and any computer you get comes with a free printer and iPod.

thirstyice, yes OIT will provide service for your computer regardless of where you get it. You will need to pay for said service though. However, OIT is only authorized (in terms of warranty) to service Apple, Dell, Gateway, and Lenovo/IBM computers. They say that: "All other computers can be serviced; however, vendor may not authorize Service Center to fix per their warranty."

Do I have to buy one of the two computers on the ND OIT website, or can I buy like a MacBook Pro from the store and still have it eligible for service?
