Has anyone ever gotten a likely letter and then been rejected?

I was just stressing about colleges and that question came to mind...

I got two last year (well, or 4. Two colleges flew me out to visit before decisions came out - i guess that was kind of a way of saying "you're probably in unless you kill someone") and got into all of them.

I don't know of anyone else who has gotten a likely letter and then been rejected either.

dumb question. i wish this was what i had to worry about.

I wish I got likely letters... but my stats aren't nearly high enough.

You've gotta be kidding me . . . be glad you got a likely letter. Congrats.

I believe it would be sadistic of colleges to send a student a likely letter, and then to reject them. A likely IS more than a "propable" so :)

Congrats!

yes. someone is my school had that happen. when the student asked the uni why he received a likely letter, they told him the letter said admission was just very possibly, not guarenteed admission, and so it turns out that he wasn't accepted.

Whoa. Urgh. Maybe I answered too quickly then. :(

But how unfortunate for your schoolmate (former or not)!

There must have been some other issue..an admin officer would not take the time to send you a letter telling you that your app was "Very impressive" and what not only to reject you. If you keep on reading the letter (i got 3)..it explicitly says you need to maintain your academic performance..perhaps that was the issue? Anyways im sure its possible but it seldom happens. Relax:)

No. He kept his grades up to the same level.

He must have done something wrong.

Well, he did ask the university why he got a likely letter...

True likely letters are as good as acceptances.

A couple of schools send out letters part way through consideration telling you how good your application is looking (unlikely, maybe, likely to be accepted). These are not the same as likely letters.

Likely letters are simply early notices of admission, and they are only called likely letters (as opposed to acceptances) because the Ivy League has a specific date on which they are allowed to begin releasing official decisions. I believe the term has spread.

Just like all admissions decisions, this "acceptance" can be withdrawn at any time. This would only happen in rare instances due to problems such as grade drops, suspension from school, lying on the application, et cetera.

kchen, this is what must've happened to your friend:

Friend: Why did I get a likely letter?
Admissions Person: Hahahaha, YOU got a likely letter? Our bad, our bad, we didn't mean to do that. Rejected!

or...

Friend: Why did I get a likely letter? I mean, jeez, even after I killed that guy? I didn't even think I'd get into college at all...
Admissions Person: Um. Nevermind.

Just kidding, I have no idea. That's weird, man.

Mehhhh, that's hilarious! College Admissions is so fickle..... So I wouldn't be surprised! ;)

My friend? You mean ranger29. Haha.

That is funny though.

mehhhh thats funny
