Has anyone ever made the jump from 650 to 750+ in CR?

For motivational purposes, it's good to know that some people out there have accomplished this. Any advice for those who are yet to surpass 700 in CR?

According to the college board website section Retaking the SAT, which discusses the difference between spring term junior year and fall term senior year scores:

“Score changes when students test again …about 1 in 25 gained 100 or more points on critical reading or mathematics, and about 1 in 90 lost 100 or more points.”

I started getting like 610s on practice tests. After a few BB tests I was getting 640 650. Then I did some Grubers test and was back down to like 610/620. 2 days before the october SAT I did a BB test and got I think 730 or something like that. I was shocked and did another test only the reading section and got like 720. I got a 720 on the actual sat so yes it’s possible. Something just magically clicks after doing enough practice tests, idk how else to explain it. Keep at it!

Thanks a lot for that, Brolex, and congratulations!

Yes it is possible! I made the jump from low 700s/high 600s to 800 in a few months. I first started studying for the SATs in July and I got a 680 on the diagnostic test, and my score gradually scaled up to a high 700s, 800s. Just work on that vocab and passages!

I am trying to accomplish that in January I need to get 700 in Critical reading I am currently studying 50 words per day and reading a story per day before sleep.

I will start also doing exams after 10 days after studying for sometime. I am also currently using [Free online speed reading software | Spreeder.com](http://www.spreeder.com/) to read some articles on the internet on every topic.

I am really interested to see how people improved their critical reading because I will be working alot to improve my English scores in December.

I scored in November :

570 writing
700 math
500 reading

I want to know if the answer to improving English is just exams or is studying more vocub or what ?

I got a 670 the first time and a 760 the second time. CR is, unfortunately, the hardest section to improve on, because it’s not really something you can teach yourself, unlike math and grammar.

I didn’t really ever study for the Critical Reading section, although I should have, but my CR score went from a 650 in January of 2011 to a 740 in October, and I have a good chance at getting even higher in December.

I just did a few occasional practice tests, but I think maybe it had something to do with having another semester of AP Lang and a month of AP Lit, idk. Start with Direct Hits (Vol. 2) at least, it has vocab worth knowing.

On the 1st practice test I’ve taken I scored 570, several test later it was pure 700. In my case, it is only the matter of vocab. Lots of vocab. And, well, reading books in English also helped (I dont mean very ambitious books like Wurthering Heights, rather like Harry Potter  ) I hope I’ll be able to go above 700 (January Sat)

Hello,

I have a similar question but referring to the writing section? Has anyone improved their writing score to 750+? If so, can you please share what prep books or any sources you used?

thank you so much

I went from no studying and making a 620 in CR to studying for about a week and getting a 730. Practice is the best way to increase your score. Also for the person above I increased 80 points in writing from 620 to 700, if that means anything to you.

Sorry since I didn’t make it to 750+ but on the PSAT last year, I got a 50 cr (ouch). This year I got a 67 so it is a good improvement.

I can’t stress this enough. Unless you’re trying for an 800, DON’T focus so much on vocabulary! Most of the vocabulary questions can be determined with severely limited knowledge of the vocabulary words. What will, on the other hand, benefit you more is an understanding of the way the questions are asked and how to quickly and skillfully find your answer in a way that you can be almost 100% sure that it is the correct answer.

about 40% of my students make that exact jump. It’s a very important one: 650 is the first big hurdle, then it’s all compare-zone until 750, where you top out in the highest category to most adcomms.

Good luck!

My son went from 550 CR in March 2010 to 740 CR Oct 2011. In addition to using the BB he used the free SAT booklets that I found linked on CC, Direct Hits 1&2, and lots of reading. He read many articles from Wired, The Economist, and Scientific American.

I moved from 570 on CR (Jan 2011) to 710 on the Nov 2011. My process was very similar to the above poster’s. I’d also add Sparknotes and CC threads as SAT prep materials.
