DD just received notice that she didn't get an interview. Oh well, already has full tuition and eng. scholarships so we feel lucky. At least now we can make plans to visit without worrying about coordinating with the interview schedule. For those interested - she had to have her stuff in on January 4th and notice just came today. Anybody know anything about the "Chancellor's Nominee" scholarship?

I think you have already gotten the Chancellors Nominee scholarship in your full tuition scholarship. Sounds like your D got the same stuff mine did last year and she didn't get any more after being told no interview.

Technically, the Chancellors Nominee scholarships are the various lesser amounts that some people get who are not getting full tuition. It gives them some money and the chance to be considered for the big prize. But I'm pretty sure if you got full tuition then you're not getting any more if you don't get an interview.

The engineering school scholarships are a nice perk for the major. I think they are funded by the engineering school alumni. Tell your D to keep her grades up her freshman year, 'cause the women alumni have a freshman scholarship ($1500 or so) you can apply for if you complete your first semester with high grades and also had high grades in hs. It's for freshman women at Pitt regardless of major. Your advisor will tell you if you qualify and send you the forms.

It really does seem the Chancellor Scholarship interviews are going to the out of staters. I know someone who has higher stats than those posted, plus wrote superlative essays and has received full ride offers from two u's of at least Pitt's calibre. This unfortunate person lives an hour away from Oakland. I really do not feel P should invite the locals to compete if almost all are eliminated from the competition before the interview. Have any Pittsburgh locals received an interview?

Limodriverlady, I think you are correct. My son had stats substantially better than some who received interviews or even won. I know he had excellent essays and superlative recommendations. Additionally, he had many extracurricular accolades and substantial work experience. Sadly, local = no interview. I know several winners and NONE were local. What are the chances of that? Pitt should be more forthright about what they want and indicate that the chancellors scholarship is for OOS.

PS - His grades, EC's and employment continue to be better than those I know who actually won. I guess Pitt made a "mistake".

Funny you should mention that Pitt made a "mistake".....

My D, who is OOS, by the way, did not get an interview. She has great stats and great everything else. But her comments after she got the "thanks but no" letter? "well, now I just have to prove them wrong. They made a mistake, Mom!" That's my girl!

She did get a full tuition and eng scholarship so we are very pleased and grateful, anyway.

Congrats to your D kschmidt! What year is she? S is a sophomore. I can't believe he is almost half done!

Thanks! My D will be a freshman in the fall, in the bioengineering program.

Oh, I hope she likes it. I was really pleased that the freshman program placed so much emphasis on writing, and the freshman engineering conference was a great experience (students present a 20 minute powerpoint program on their research papers).

I think it's really had to figure out how Pitt does things; that is, why some students are chosen over others to interview for the Chancellor's. It sounds like a crap shoot! But it's an honor to be nominated from among all the well- qualified students. Maybe they consider intended major??? Maybe they're looking for some experience really extraordinary?? And many school systems just do not have the resources nor the teachers to offer students competitive opportunities. (I'm thinking of Intel/Westinghouse type of competitions which usually cost time /$ in which to get involved....) Anyway, just my opinion...

also, not getting an interview is a good reflection on pitt -- it shows that there are a large number of highly qualified candidates who are considering the school. heck, maybe i'm weird but - it makes me want to attend the university more than if i had gotten the scholarship.

LBP - you may be on to something about the competitions. As I posted earlier on this thread we are oos and didn't get an interview (hence no Chancellors for us) and D had lots of good typical stuff (35ACT, NMF). While she'd done district and state science fairs (did not actually go to int'al), she was invited to apply for RSI, but didn't get in. That was the first we even knew it existed. Much later in senior year we found out about Intel/Westinghouse, Siemens, and other stuff on CC. By the time we knew it existed it was much too late to do anything about.

D was lucky enough to get invited to go on the Chancellors weekend (which somehow opened up to people who didn't get the Chancellors this year) and some of the people were amazing. They had turned schools like MIT, Berkeley, Columbia, Rice, U of Chicago. Living in the honors dorm she has even met someone whose parent is a prof at MIT.

I think the competition is fiercer and on a higher level lately. This only enhances Pitt's rep and opens up more opportunities for the kids who go there. More dollars donated to the school, more interaction with more types of people. Our kids are all special and we are all blessed to have them. Just 'cause they don't get a particular award is not the end of the world, and we shouldn't let them think that way either.

D has also met several SAT 1600's (MV). I just think things at Pitt are a lot more competitive than they used to be.

Yes, I agree with you. Pitt had gotten much more competitive - especially in light of the fact that they do give merit $ to outstanding students. Their scholarship program itself - plus its reputation in many science-oriented fields - has probably brought many more qualified and bright students to its door! It's an exciting time to be at Pitt. (I'd be interested in knowing the backgrounds of this yr's Chancellor's recipients.) If anyone cares about USNWR rankings, I'd venture to say that the next issue will probably show Pitt movin' right on up the ladder....
