??
only heard from college af arts and architecture NOT schreyers. Just wondering if you hear only from one does that mean the other is a rejection? Anybody?

was this a rejection to PSU or just the honors college?

@gmantoo and amandakayak

Ds was accepted into PSU in November, this rejection is for Schreyers specifically, as others have said - small envelope = bad news, big white envelope = good news

Congratulations to all who got accepted! I believe SHC is an excellent school and its students will certainly do well. Unfortunately, I was denied. I believe I had a strong application but, for different reasons, I applied shortly after the priority deadline and I paid the price.

A few comments to the school:
- There is a HUGE gap between the perceived value of an education at SHC and at PSU. That gap is not saved by the possibility of joining SHC during the sophomore year. In spite of the marketing effort to “sell” PSU to denied SHC applicants, one Twitter entry by Dean Brady says it all: “In regular courses no one shows up the day after an exam. In honor courses, all your classmates are there asking you how you did”. No more evidence is needed. Four other students in my school were also denied, and none is going to PSU. I’m going to either Chicago, Carnegie Mellon, or USC.
- a) I have truly enjoyed Dr. Brady’s blogs on the website. As a foreigner who struggles to present immaculate application essays, however, Dr. Brady should set the example and not write things like “formulate a responses”, or “propose” instead of “purpose”. b) His blog called “Conduct becoming a Scholar” was disappointing and not appropriate, in my opinion. There is no need to address responsible, accomplished adults, if you truly believe they are, and remind them of the consequences for “bad” behavior.
- The admission replies should either be online or through letters. I did not appreciate finding out through the school’s website -once I learned through this site that this was possible, it was inevitable-, when we were told that only the letters would serve that purpose (except for foreign applicants not living in the US). The legend “This page is unavailable” was not true and useless. No one would have died for waiting 3 or 4 days to accept offers of admission. This was poorly organized.
Good luck to all!

Another day…nothing. Called SHC and they said all letters went out Fri. D got her acceptance to school of music yesterday(it was postmarked Fri). How can the other letter not be here by now? Arghhhhh.

Anyone else not get letter yet? We’re in NY.

D received a denial in NY in Monday’s mail. Honors at UMD and not PSU. HHHMMMM?

I would like to make a quick reply to rogelm.

The twitter post you have quoted was NOT from me. That was one of our students who tweeted that. I do not think that there is a massive gulf between the SHC and a PSU experience outside of the SHC. We have great students and faculty here and I strongly encourage folks to consider Penn State, regardless of your status with the SHC. (And I say that as a graduate of Cornell, Oxford, and someone who has taught at other top schools and been on evaluation committees for many others.)

Penn State is a great university and there are many others in the US and elsewhere. I recognize and encourage prospective students to consider carefully what is the “best fit” for them. It may not be Penn State because you want a smaller school or one in the southwest or… many other reasons. But that is a question of fit, not academics.

Finally, regarding the “hack” that some discovered to be able to go onto our site and determine if they had been accepted or not before receiving the letter, I agree, that is not how students should find out. And that was not our intent either. In the future we will not allow that site to be active until several days after the letters have gone out.

I know this is a tough time waiting for admissions and can be very disappointing for many and we certainly did not intend for anyone to find out about it such a circuitous way. I wish everyone the best and look forward to meeting those of you (and your children) who have been accepted.

My fervent wish is that each one find the right school for them. It may be Penn State, perhaps not, but most of all I hope that they find their school.

Dr. Brady,

Thank you very much for your reply. I sincerely apologize for my remark quoting you, when it was a student entry in reality.
I have no doubt that PSU is an excellent option for many students, and in the end, I believe that what each student makes of his/her studies is way more important than the university he/she decides to attend.

I didn’t mean to cause all of this confusion about using the site, either. I contemplated seeing what would happen for a few hours, and once I decided to enter my information and got back what seemed to be good news, I wanted to see if others received similar information. As excited as I was, I knew others would be as well, and decided to put it on this site- perhaps a bad idea. Either way, I did not mean to cause all of this turbulence over it, and for that I’m sorry.

rogelm - Thank you for your reply (and I apologize for my typos, even in my last response).

madarensie - I certainly understand and frankly I am not blaming anyone for trying. It is not really a “hack” since no one was trying to illegally enter or break the system, we simply and inadvertently left the door open a crack. We will correct that in the future.

Thanks for understanding.

Dean Brady…is there any other way to get acceptance info? Daughter received acceptance from admissions office yesterday that was postmarked the 4th, the same day SHC sent out letter. Haven’t received it yet. This is her earliest possible acceptance and we’re (I) getting anxious!

Thanks

Son was rejected. Kind of hard to believe since he was accepted to 4 other Honors programs including Boston College and Michigan. 1480/2150, Chem SAT of 800, Composite ACT 32 with 36 on Science. 6 APs, Captain 2 sports. Much more. Oh well, they probably didnt like his essays. Too bad - PSU is missing out on a great kid.

^^
wow…should have been a no brainer…

Accepted! Dang haha can’t believe the dean is on this thread! After all it’s public.

Just a bit of insight to Schreyer from a parent of a past student and a recently-accepted future student. First, don’t be surprised that Dean Brady monitors these threads. He is EXTREMELY hands-on in his job. He isn’t like any other Dean I’ve heard of in that he’s quite frankly pretty cool and totally involved. My daughter, who recently graduated from Schreyer, was adamant on attending a small college when she was in high school. Schreyer truly is a small elite school in a huge sea of Penn State opportunities. You get to know the other kids in the honors college but you will interact with thousands of other non-Schreyer kids and choose your friends from both. My daughter made some friends-for-life from Schreyer and she is definitely a “non-geek”, as are many many many other kids in the honors college. And here’s the best part - along with a true honors education you get the Penn State experience - if you haven’t been to a PSU football game, you haven’t lived. On game days, you have thousands of brothers and sisters at Penn State. Also, the resources that PSU has to offer all students are absolutely unbelievable. Please believe me when I say there’s a reason they call it Happy Valley.

Does anyone know: Do students applying undecided (DUS) have a shot at acceptance to SHC, or do they really want kids who are already successfully on a specific path?

Nope, the SHC considers everyone equally, no major bias.

My daughter, as well as some of her friends, got in DUS.

My son was not accepted into shreyers but a few of his friends were. We weren’t as shocked at him not getting in as we were at who did. One of his friends was never even interested in going to penn state. This friend also hates to read and therefore I would be highly surprised if his essays were better than my son who has been an avid lover of literature. Anyway, just wondering if there is any way at all to petition shreyer for another look? The fact that he was offered nothing for a merit scholarship just kind of hurts. He has 4.6 GPA, 2030 SAT, State champion for choral music, EMT, lead in all the musicals (and our high school is large), president of chorus, various volunteer activities.
