Has anyone heard that they're NOT NM finalists?

If you dig deeply enough into your NMSC semifinalist packet, you'll find a flowchart giving dates of all the stages in the National Merit competition.

On this year's chart, it says "Semifinalists who do not advance to Finalist standing notified" January 2006. That said, has anyone (or their friends) heard this horrible news?

My friend was notified in mid-January that he hadn't made Finalist. He wasn't too upset, though.

I guess no news really is good news. Good luck, everyone.

hysteron - do you know of any reason why your friend didn't make it. Not to be personal, since 15 out of every 16 advance . . . ?

hysteron - did your friend get notified that he hadn't made it through the school or did he get a letter at home?

wow, so if we haven't heard from them yet, we're finalists? woot woot!

I haven't heard either way yet, so I hope so.

My friend received a letter at home 2-3 weeks ago. His SAT scores were good (800 V, 790 M), but his GPA and class rank are quite low.

I went to my counselor's office today, and he told me that they'd received a list of those students who had been eliminated in mid-January.

Word is out to the schools today. Happily I made it. Now just wait to hear about the cash!

I too heard today that I'm a finalist. Yay. 16K to 15K isn't that huge of a jump, but I'm still pretty happy.

I haven't heard either way yet. Should I be worried since I haven't been notified by my school or received a letter? Also, where do you live (those of you who hvae heard that you're finalists)? Maybe the mail is just really slow...

kkm---I haven't found out either, but if you haven't recieved a letter in Mid-January saying you weren't a Finalist, you should be fine. I bet my school got the letter today, and I'll hear tomorrow. At least I hope so!

good luck to you, I'm sure you'll be fine.

The snail mail hasn't apparently made it to Arkansas yet either. Hopefully tomorrow. DD (and Mom and counselor, etc.) would really like to know for sure.

Snail mail did finally make it to Arkansas. D is finalist. First one in 7 years for her school.

My son's school announced today that all 3 of their semi's made NMF.
