I have to read a 500 page book for my freshman English class and I thought I would challenge myself and read War and Peace. I have read books like the Iliad, the Odyssey, and the Aeneid (all decently challenging reads for middle school students I think), and I was wondering if anyone has read War and Peace before, and their experiences while reading it and/or their thoughts. Any feedback would be appreciated especially advice on the translation, how to read it, etc.

I’m reading it on my own right now, and it isn’t as rough as people make it out to be. The language isn’t as particularly difficult (unless of course you’re reading it in Russian), but it does help if you know a bit of French since that’s a lot of the dialogue. It’s just the length that’s hard to overcome, but you just need to set page goals for yourself and keep at it. Also, it will be more enjoyable if you have a grasp of European history and culture at the time.

I just have the free edition on my Kindle. Good luck!

I read war and peace in 8th grade and it took me about two and a half weeks (all I did was read). I can’t remember too much but I reallly liked it

I am reading it now too, except I don’t get much time to actually sit down and read. The language isn’t too difficult, as penguin369 mentioned and the story flows pretty well. However, its kind of long (my edition is 1000ish pages with bible font), so you should be sure you’ll have plenty of reading time. Otherwise, you’ll just end up rushing through it, which is no fun at all.
