Has anyone’s child been rejected from a school before VP/ music audition date ?

DD applied to a VP ( classic) and received a rejection letter from school before her confirmed audition in two weeks. . School does not have a prescreen requirement. The letter said that they would reconsider her application for the Spring semester providing she enrolls in the school part time (or enrolls in another school) and gets nothing below C’s. Any advice? We are so confused. Thank you!

Consider yourself lucky that you didn’t go all the way there and do the audition and THEN get rejected for completely non-musical reasons.

It sounds like a possible academic rejection. All schools operate differently concerning academic and music acceptances. Just to be safe, I would suggest calling music admissions and discussing the letter with them. First to find out if it is indeed an academic decline. And then to determine what to do about the audition. Some music schools can override academic issues…but those schools often “hold” candidates as opposed to reject them. So call the music school…it’s just better to know than guess. And sometimes there are errors.

It is early in the process (believe it or not). Rejections do often come earlier than acceptances. So hang in there!

Thank you for your thoughtful input Bridgenail and Music2023. Should I call them or should my daughter call ?

This school and some of the other schools she applied to have all stated that they hold off on making admissions decision until after auditions. So, when we got this letter, it was surprising and confusing.

Also, Bridgenail what do you mean by some schools “ hold” candidates as opposed to reject them?

Thanks again!

Everyone else is likely to tell you to have D call. Frankly, I would call myself. The school absolutely will not care who calls - especially as the question is not directed to a potential instructor she would be working with. This is confusing and important information. I would want to hear the answer directly, not second hand through my 18 year old. You, as the parent and adult, will be more likely to “hear” anything that could be confusing in the response. You, as an adult, may also have further questions depending on what you are told that would not occur to a student who has not yet had the joys of negotiating university bureaucracies.

Totally agree with comment above. As a parent, I would do the call on an issue like this.

A “general” rule that I followed during admissions was if the communication was with a teacher, I had my D do the contact (however I was definitely the puppet-master in the background of those emails). If it was administration, it was me (and no it doesn’t negatively impact your kid to call an administrator). Don’t fall into the trap that you can’t call the school during admissions about money or policies or confusing communication. There is too much at stake (from YOUR pocket book).

Edit: I know in some cases (at IU for example) that some students received letters that said their academic acceptance was held pending their audition. While other prospective students receive an academic acceptance. So if the music school declined them, the students with an academic acceptance could still attend the university (but not enter the music program). The students “held” were declined from the whole university if they didn’t pass the audition.

Ok thank you! I will call tomorrow and see what the story is. It’s possible that admissions doesn’t know or overlooked the fact that she is applying as a voice major.

Update: Called music department and explained to whoever answered and they said no audition if she is not accepted academically to school, sorry. The music website has FAQ and one of the questions asks…What if I get into the music department but not the school… Answer: Please call music department, there may be other options available. To me…This implies that it is possible to audition before getting a decision from admission and also, if the music department wants you then there might be a work around. Also, the audition confirmation email stated that if the student hadn’t yet applied to the school academically, they should begin that process. They have rolling admissions and deadline is April 1st.The process just seems very disjointed and disorganized .

@BabybirdMom Ugh, i’m so sorry that happened. I’m sure she is meant to be somewhere else!!! It will all work out!

Thanks Music2023! You’re right! That’s the way I’m choosing to look at it. ?
