I'm currently living on-campus (in towers) and am wondering if any of you had installed wireless networks in your dorms? If so how does this work with the resnet MAC, does it only see the routers MAC and not the devices? also, if anyone has a network have you been caught?

I saw a handful of nearby wireless access points (which were obviously students w/ routers) over the first few weeks, and they slowly disappeared. I’m only assuming they were caught, and asked to remove their routers (or worse.)

Do know that “using a router or running a network of any kind is forbidden” on Resnet. I have a few guesses as to why.

Not every student is bound to know how to properly configure a router, and may leave their wireless access point open to the public. This could (and does often) lead to nearby students/people using this unsecured access point. Any sort of discrepancy committed via this unsecured access point (i.e. piracy) would be traced back to the router, and therefore back to the student with the router – somebody gets in trouble for something they didn’t do.

On the topic of not knowing how to properly configure a router, with the plug-and-play nature of routers these days, any given router type/brand could automatically fill in the needed addresses that don’t mesh well with Resnet’s own addresses (namely the subnet mask, and gateway) leading to possible loops, service outages, etc. If a student’s router happens to request the same subnet mask already requested by Resnet, there’s a neverending clash.

With that said, it is possible to run a wireless router on any network securely and invisibly, and it’s also possible to define your router’s MAC address as anything of your choosing, reporting only that one MAC address to the outgoing network. Finally, it is possible to run a router on Resnet safely, causing no issues or safety cautions whatsoever.

You understand that I can’t tell you how to do this, as it’s against the rules. However, if it’s a risk you’re willing to take, you should definitely do your research before deciding to use a wireless router on Resnet. You simply cannot plug-and-play a router here; it will cause problems, and that is why the sysops forbid them.

Ultimately, I wouldn’t recommend it, but I’m the “follow the rules” type.
