Has anyone tried to switch their starting term from Summer to Fall?

A sneak peak has shown that D was admitted to UF for Spring of 2010. She can go anywhere until then, but cannot enter with more than 12 hours. Accepted for Summer at FSU, she'd have 6 hours and at least 12 in the Fall which would put her over.

This is quite the dilemma. FSU was second choice after UF and would be great, but D wants to study Pharmacy at UF, which they don't have at FSU.

Pharmacy is graduate degree. Do undergrad at FSU then grad school at UF. A very credible process which is repeated frequently in both directions.

I tend to believe she could attend Santa Fe community college in the Fall. She could work over the summer to earn money for college expenses and get some experience or possibly travel. Community college tuition will save you money too. This way you open up a spot for a hopeful student who really wants to be a Seminole.

P2N, PharmD is a 4 year program after 2 years of prerequisites. While many do not get accepted right off in their 3rd year, some do and she'd have a better shot being at UF already. Otherwise, getting a Bachelor's then going to PharmD puts her at 8 years of college versus 6. We're just looking at making the best use of her time in college.

The Sante Fe route for Fall Semester looks like the best viable alternative. We're researching that now.

I'd have to check with a family member who is a pharmacist to be sure, but it's my impression the PhD in pharmacy (the Pharm D) is still the exception rather than the rule in practice. It appears from the UF website the program started in 2002. He's licensed in two states and also worked as a corporate supervisor over a staff of pharmacists so he'd have an idea as to convention I should think.

Still, cybermom makes a great point as usual.

Tzais, my family member confirmed that the pharmd is the newly required terminal degree for all pharmacists. I was unaware of that change. It would seem your best bet then would be for her to go to UF (perhaps through Santa Fe) or simply take the months off from academic work and earn some funds for school. I'd almost suggest the latter, as it seems she'll have a long stretch of academic work to complete. Perhaps a stint in a pharmacy as an employee or shadowing a pharmacist?

Don't forget that FAMU also has a pharmacy program.

Thank you P2N. Yes, all the colleges have that PharmD are 4 years after 2 years. Some schoold have a 0-6 plan where they go right in as Freshman and are guaranteed getting into Pharmacy school, but non are Florida public U's. I know about FAMU, but concerned about their program's accreditation problems.

I think the Santa Fe route for Fall and moving to G'ville and getting used to it would be a great way to stay on track for Pre-pharmacy curriculum starting UF in January.

Tzais;
Be aware that to go the 2 year route will be challenging for many reasons:
1- UF requires you to have your Associates degree within 2 years.
2- You will need to have completed ALL of the pharmacy pre requisites.
3- You also have had to complete ALL of the UF required supplemental classes. You will need to squeeze these into 2 years rather than the 4 years it normally takes. Not easy to do. Tough to get some of the classes.

If they force you to only take 12 credits total you will be behind not only on completing the required classes but the sequence of some of the classes. Ex Physics 1 then Physics 2.

You need to have this carefully planned out way before day 1.

Our experience is that one can ask to start Summer if accepted to FSU Fall. Each year there are LOTS of students accepted for Summer who beg and plead to start Fall and their request is declined.

I suspect Santa Fe or local CC is a better option if she wants to be at UF and has been accepted for Spring.

XNYer, yes the 2 years of Pharmacy prerequisites takes some very careful planning, It think there are 72 hours total. Definitely need to do summers. Hopefully, that will help if we do an appeal to start in Summer instead of Spring.

Sunnyflorida, since Fall is in greater demand than Summer, the switch will not be easily achieved. D has a friend who went from Fall to Summer, but that makes sense it would be easier.
