I'm really starting to freak out about admissions. I think UVA has officially moved ahead of Cornell (they were tied pretty much at first, with UVA being ever so slightly ahead of it), but I really don't think I have much of a shot because people say that it's impossible to get in from OOS. My GPA UW sucks (3.88 or 3.89 with 11 IB/APs although weighted is higher) and my ACT score is terrible as well (30). I have decent ECs such as 3-4 leadership positions, 150+ hours of community service, etc. but I'm just wondering if average people like me get in from OOS, because from what I hear, people like me have no shot.

That's a great question, my guess would probably be that in a case like yours, it comes down to recs and essays, but I haven't even been admitted yet, so IDK lol. good luck wherever you end up!

ok well first of all stop being over dramatic at 3.89 and 30 on ACT are not horrible. that being said, i was wait listed last year with a 3.98 UW, 30 act, ranked #1 out of a class of 300ish and had the full IB course load. I had great ECs with plenty of leadership and community service hours. my recommendations were glowing and my essays were pretty good. predicting OOS acceptance is a crap shoot, you have to be highly qualified, much more than IS. hopefully the adcom will see something in your application that they like and let you in, if not well, you are not alone.

my fr-jr gpa (the one you're admitted under) was only 3.77uw (4.5 w) with only 6 ap's
my sat's were considerably better though (1510, 780 writing satii), and i was taking college classes (not easy bs, calculus 2 and 3, and not at a community college) not through my hs but during hs (nights) and getting As in those so i figure that gave me a leg up
admissions really is a bunch of bull. i got into uva (off of a deferral, btw) and vanderbilt, but not w+m. i mean... what. lol. so dont take it personally if you dont get in. youll get in where youre meant to go.

They will ask for an updated mid-yr transcript. If you only have one period, that is a year long, instead of like a semester, then I really have no idea. Probably a progress rpt, I think I read that on their website.

Remember to take everything here with a grain of salt. No one is an admissions officer and no one can tell you for sure one way or the other. We can make educated guesses based on personal experiences and those of our friends and families but none of us knows your personal history or the cohort of those vying for coveted UVa spots this year. Good luck and hang tight--you don't have much longer to wait!

For what it's worth, here are my stats. I'm out of state and was admitted but decided not to attend.

GPA: 94.3/100 (~3.9)
ACT: 32
APs: Bio 5, Chem 5, Calc AB 5, Calc BC 4

Student Council, Youth in Government, Amnesty International, actively involved with my church and community, varsity lacrosse, 20+ hours working each week, 150+ hours community service, amazing summer opportunities

essays about service project and leadership experiences

amazing recommendations

my hook? National Finalist from Missouri, Jefferson Scholars

Your stats are pretty good; 3.89 with 11 APs/IBs is impressive. I'm not quite sure how the ACT works, but it doesn't seem horrible. I mean, you didn't list any big name awards or anything, but I doubt that's an absolute necessity. Essays and recs will really make or break an OOS applicant with high scores, it seems. Ultimately, it's a crapshoot.

I'm OOS/international and have about the same scores and ECs as you, so I'm in about the same boat! Good luck.

Despite the fact that UVA oos is harder than in state, it's not impossible to get into. Rather, UC Berkeley and UNC are both much harder to get into than UVA for oos applicants. So, don't worry too much since you seem to have decent grades, SAT, ecs. As a note, I got into UVA oos last year and saw 4 of my close friends from my school get in as well and none of us had stellar stats.

I think that the deciding factors may be your recommendations & the type, nature & extent of your leadership positions. Based on your original post and its tone and without more relevant info., your chances are not great.
