Has FSU met your expectations?

For those who are attending, have attended or have students currently attending, would you say that FSU has met or exceeded your expectations?

what things have been better then you expected?

What things have been worse?

As a parent of a future Nole, i will start by saying that so far FSU has exceeded my expectations. The university staff that we have met and spoken with have all gone out of their way to be so nice and helpful. For such a large university, FSU somehow manages to create an environment that feels much smaller than it is.

PROS
My son absolutely loves FSU.
He has a nice group of friends and is very happy there.
I think he is getting an excellent education in accounting.
Business Major advisers are readily available.
Courses prepare students for life after college, for example Behavior Based Interview techniques were taught in Business Communications.
I really like how automated all the registration, billing, grades and course information is.
Their web site is awesome and it is easy to find answers.
The bus system has worked out to be very convenient from his apartment.
For the most part he has had excellent professors.
You don't have to take the meal plan, unless you are in one of the renovated dorms.
There are many activities available if you take advantage of them. My son got involved with the intramural and club wrestling.
Football games are really fun. FSU has many great sports teams.
It is really easy to find a variety of FSU college logo clothes and paraphernalia.
In state costs are very reasonable.
The area is more Georgia-like instead of Florida-like.

CONS
Some teachers do not use all the Bb tools available to them.
When paying online they charge a $5 service fee.
Parking can be a problem.
Some classes are very large, but that does not bother my son.
They reduced the library hours as a cost cutting measure but were open extended hours for finals week.
No walk-in appointments for the health clinic.
The ride home is about 4 hours to Orlando, even longer to South Florida.

I just got my copy of the fsu.edu | family connection newsletter and it says that they will now be keeping Strozier Library open 24 hours Monday - Thursday and will close at 10pm on Friday and Saturday, midnight on Sunday.

About cybermom's cons- The Thagard Health Center, which I'm assuming you're talking about, does have walk-in appointments. I was just there without an appointment last week. I only waited ten minutes. I had a high fever and the flu...during finals. It was hell.

FSU has exceeded my expectations in every aspect. Really, the parking isn't even that bad. In addition- I love Suwannee Dining, no matter what anyone says. Get a meal plan.

Thanks Khohman -- Glad to hear you are feeling better.
I appreciate you letting us know, you were able to walk-in for prompt medical attention.

khohman,

thanks for the reply. hope you are feeling better. what year are you in? what dorm did/do you live in? what classes did you enjoy. glad to hear your comments about the food. it seems like purchasing garnet bucks (while a bit more expensive) may be the way to go as it gives you total felxibility to eat where you want to. we ate at suwannee when we visited and though it was fine. Good variety, no lines. didn't make it to frsh food, but we heard that is a good option as well.

I think you can use cash to eat at the cafeterias and restaurants as well but I believe the garnet bucks gives you a small discount.

i guess flex bucks is the way to go.

I'm a freshman. I've lived in Jennie which is the all-girls dorm. I wouldn't suggest it, it's just too much estrogen in one place. I moved to Gilchrist and I love it. It is an honors dorm, but people that are not in honors can still live there. It's a good environment, and I would suggest Gilchrist or the other honors dorm Landis to anyone if they have the opportunity to get in. I also like Wildwood, but who doesn't.

I rarely go to Fresh Food because Suwannee is so close, but Fresh Food is definitely the favorite amongst students.

As for classes:
Chemistry I- I'd suggest taking it with Monwar.
w/ lab- some TAs are better than others- it's just luck who you get.
Pre-Calculus- Dr. Kutter goes insanely slow, but for those who may have trouble, it's a good class to take. Final exam can be up to 50% of your grade.
Spanish 1124- hybrid of Spanish I & 2- a good starting class for those who went up to Spanish III in high school.
Brain & Behavior- I got an A in the class and only showed up for quizzes and tests. It's a lot of information.

For the first semester, I would take 15 or less credit hours. Originally I had 16 hours when I was taking trigonometry as well the classes above, but I dropped trig when I knew it would be near-impossible to get an A. Of course, now I have to take trig next semester with an even tougher schedule, but I am much better prepared.

I hope that helps! GO NOLES!

KHohman

yes. that's great info... thanks

my s applied for wildwood first, then gilchrist second. he has a really good priority number, so i think he will get wildwood, but it sounds like gilchrist is great also.

the info on the classes is really helpful. what is your major? my s thinks finance/real estate.

thanks again.
