What was your opinion of the class? Anything I should know before signing up? My school is IB but offers it to sophomores, so I'm planning to take advantage of it!

The class is only as good as the teacher who teaches it. You need to find out from the kids who took it at your school.

^^ Spot on.

DS’ history teacher loved him and thought DS was “gifted” in the history/poli sci type field (whatever gifted would mean in that context, lol). However, he emphatically discouraged DS from AP Gov based on how it was taught - ie, teaching to the test without encouraging a lot of thinking.

Thank you both so much! I think I will take it regardless… I took World II this year so my only other option is World I… Which would be almost demeaning I think.

S just took the exam & got a 5 w/o taking the course. He studied for several hours at the bookstore & library. He was not willing to take it as a course, but of course much depends on the instructor & what s/he brings to the class.

lol, what would be “demeaning” about studying WWI?

It isn’t offered as an honors class… And I have never taken a normal class before…

I took AP Gov online and it was fine.

Thanks! I know my school doesn’t have the greatest gov teachers so I think I will have to self study… But I thrive on that :)

Agree with those who say it depends entirely on how it is taught. Son’s class was taught by the same teacher who taught AP U.S. He was an excellent teacher, enthusiastic, well read and extremely knowledgeable. The class did many papers and presentations not required to cover the exam. Unfortunately, that teacher retired the next year.

As I remember it, son got two scores, one for comparative government and one for U.S. government.

Thanks! I appreciate the response!
