Hey guys,

So I’ve recently thought about taking AP Comp Gov next year as a junior, I’m wondering what others thought about the class/exam. I’m taking it as an elective (American gov is required as a senior, but comp gov can be taken anytime as an elective) just because I’m interested in the topic (not planning on majoring into anything that’s related to the course). The class is a semester course at my school. This would be my 6th AP for junior year. Since I’ve only taken 2 APs before (WHAP and Bio), I was wondering if another AP class would be too much, or if it would be doable.

The teacher in my school is decent, but it would be his second tome teaching the course (the first time was like 2-3 years ago, the school is bringing it back up again). Would I be fine taking the course, or would it be too much? How was the exam?

Thanks

bump? Any insight on the class and/or exam would be great

The exam is different from a lot of the other AP History exams. There are 55 multiple choice questions, and 8 free-response questions (though some of the questions may be like 7a, 7b, 7c, etc.). The good thing about this exam is that for the free response you can answer the questions in as many sentences as you want as long as it answers the questions. This means that depending on the question you can answer it in as little as one sentence! You will be studying and comparing the politics and governments of Britain, Russia, China, Iran, Nigeria and Mexico.

While I personally didn’t think the course or test was hard, it is something you will have to study in order to pass. What makes the course partly difficult isn’t the quality of the content, but rather the quantity of the content. On that note, the course is partly vocab base, and if you don’t study the government structures and history well you won’t do good.

What are the other AP classes you will be taking? I don’t want to say no and try to limit anyone, however, if you have a heavy AP course load already then I personally would hold off on it; especially since this is your junior year. I say this because chances are you will be doing a lot of SAT or ACT testing, and it can be overwhelming at times trying to balance the studying of standardized tests and AP/School course work-plus other things like extracurriculars and other social activities.

If you think and know you can handle it, then I say go for it. However, really do think about whether or not you will be able to handle such a load.

Best of luck to you, and I hope I was of some type of assistance!

-Tema, Class of 2015

@TemaDino Thanks for the insight!

The APs I’m taking are:
AP Physics 1
AP Chemistry
APUSH
AP Calculus BC
AP Language

I’m extremely interested in history & politics (especially with an int. perspective) which is why I’m thinking about this class, but like you said, I dont want to overstress myself. So do you think the class would be doable?

I say do it. I took it this year as a senior and the AP exam was pretty tolerable to say the least, as was the class. If you want you might want to consider self-studying, that is if you can find a good review book which there aren’t many.

@GeologyRocks Thanks! I think I’ll take it, it doesn’t look like too hard of a class anyways.

@Zeppelin7 Sorry for the late response. If you know you can handle it then do it. :)
