I’m an slightly above average student (3.75 GPA all for years /1240 SAT’s) I have taken honors and college classes throughout HS lots of EC’s, volunteer work, paid work and 4 years of sports. I look like a well rounded student on paper. I’m not the best test taker but when I review OSU’s data I fall into 25% of students who scored at or below on standarized tests. I guess I’m just looking for anyone with similiar stats who have been accepted???
Hey - A 3.75 GPA, 1240 on the SATs and great activities is well above average! You obviously worked very hard and should be proud of your accomplishments. My daughter has similar numbers.
In our town, the only students who have received acceptance letters were from schools with rolling admissions such as Indiana and Pittsburgh.
Be patient and stay positive!
@kesnyder5 Your SAT score is low but I notice you are an Out-of-state applicant. As Ohio State wants geographic diversity (depending on where you are from—but being from NY or NJ or Pennsylvania, where tOSU received thousands of applicants from, will not weigh as much as if you are an applicant from Nevada, Florida or Texas, for example) and the increased out-of-state tuition dollars, this may help your chances, especially if you listed a less competitive or less popular intended major /school within tOSU on your application. Your extracurricular activities and high gpa (with rigorous schedule consisting of honors and AP) will also help your chances.
I’ve seen people with below a (equivalent to your SAT score) 25 on the ACT get into OSU, but then again that was an in-state applicant. I’d agree that it depends on major and your essay. Good luck!
I applied to Fisher and know that my stats will not give me a direct admit but could I still be able to be admitted as a “pre business” major?
I was an “average student” in high school and am currently a second year at Ohio State. I had a 3.8 weighted gpa and a 30 ACT. It was 100% my extracurriculars that got me in. I was super involved and Ohio State definitely looks at that for borderline students.
I have relatively the same stats as you but I am extremely involved in extra curriculars, community service, etc. I had a 1220 on my SAT and a 3.9 GPA and got in. Don’t stress!
My friend got accepted yesterday into Psychology with at 21 ACT and 3.58 GPA.
They did a TON of community service and took harder classes throughout high school, and in my opinion, wrote an extremely good essay for the common app.
Don’t count yourself out, you got a shot!
Yes, my son. He is currently a Freshman Direct Admit at OSU Fisher/Finance major.
OSU truly uses a holistic admissions process.
Here are his stats I posted last year on this site…
My son (OSS from IL) applied early 10/30. ACT composite is 31, Weighted GPA is a tad under 3.7 (I think 3.69) out of 4.0 - somewhat low though he has taken mostly honors/AP courses, incl. AP Calc, AP Physics, 4 years AP history incl AP Econ, 2 years AP Engl, 4 years of French, 4 years pre-engineering PLTW (which has taught him he does not want to be an engineer).
He played 3 HS sports (co-captain of lacrosse), 4 years of Int’l summer mission trips, presidential volunteer award, caddy for 5 years (promoted to senior honors caddy), summer job at an engineering co., started a neighborhood business,
HS clubs: Investment/Stock Club, Business Leaders Club, Spirit Club, nominated by peers to lead school anti-bullying campaign.
BTW, he absolutely loves OSU and is thriving there.
Sorry to tell you this @Scubaski1 but with those stats and ECs, your son is well above average.
Thank you STEM2017 for giving me some perspective…
My son just got a deferred decision. He has a 1270 highest single sitting SAT. 3.75 unweighted and 4.9 weighted. Plays varsity sports, has worked 20 hours per week for the last 2 years. Has taken a total of 14 AP and honors classes. National Honor Society. Great recommendations. From an excellent school in South Jersey. Large class so he’s in the top 25. I’ve see people say he should email his admissions rep saying that he has OSU as his top choice. How does he do that? How does his send in updated grades from his fall semester? Thanks
He should reach out to Lauren Heatherly, regional recruitment manager for New Jersey. Send a BRIEF email outlining the points you made above. Good luck!
@STEM2017 thank you for the advice!
My son just got flat out rejected by OSU Civil Engineering, presumably based on academic credentials. He has 3.7 unweighted GPA from the top-ranked, highly competitive public school in my state (CA) and SAT 1330 (690 math 640 eng). Varsity HS soccer captain, volunteered at HfH, both parents studied/worked at OSU. Kinda depressing how competitive colleges are nowadays… PS. I am sure his GPA would be over 4.5, if he went to a different school - I guess they don’t care about the strength of the program…
